Stronger CV's/axles for higher boost? - Boost Forum

Ive been "planning" a buildup a while now and have slowly been getting parts and money, and now, my cv's are going out. So i was curious, those of you running in excess of 15psi on a 2.4 have you had to change to stronger cv's? How about axles? Would cryoed stock units be sufficient? I have the money to replace these now so i figured if i need to upgrade later i may as well do it now while theyre bad. ALso has anyone successfully used HO axles from the 2.3? Is it worth it? Thanks guys for any help you can provide.

Mike Karas tried to use stock axles on his 2.4 with Nitto 555R drag radials with around 320hp. The axles lasted 2-3 runs at the track....until the tires hooked.

H/O axels and tranny both....... hopefully will be enough to handle my motor.

anyone try to retro fit a Getrag 284 tranny? they are mucho beefier then a 282. There is one in the garage my motor is taken apart in from a Z34, maybe I will see if the bolts line up. Axels are like three times the size and it weighs A LOT more, I have heard they handle over 400hp on the tranny and over 300 on the axels with a nice person driving.
22 miles per gallon and dropping fast...
I have seen aftermarket CV axles for our cars but they are expensive as hell. I am trying to remember where I saw them. ah found it

Hey Josh, which HO axles did you use? Beretta, Cutlass, Achieva, Grand Am?
The Beretta GTZ HO axles I have are shorter then the 3rd gen J axles...... I'll measure again, but I think they where about an 1" shorter on either side.
We managed to take out a stock Isuzu axle at the bash. Outer CV came apart, and the inner splines that go into the diff are twisted. We only pulled the Driver's so far, but I'm betting the Passenger splines are probably twisted as well. Welded diff, BFG Drag Radials, 11psi boost.......

Brian....
For me the H.O axles are easy - if the NVG Bolted up in the same spot to the 2.3 then that means the axles HAVE to be long enough since the suspension hasn't really changed on the J-body....
My H.O's are from a 1994 Grand AM H.O....
Also, I know of one person who is running the H.O Axles on their Isuzu tranny.
One last thing, when you search it up in car-part.com, the axles are for some reason listed as being the same part from 1990-1997 even though 1990-1994 were the H.O axles and the 95-97 were pathetic toothpick axles.
Seems even the junkyards feel they're the same length/part.....
I'll let you know for sure when mine are installed... but I DO know of one person who has them installed on an isuzu tranny at this point in time so they HAVE to fit.
Good luck man, get better axles... broken splines suck.

yeah the 284 was a beefcake of a trans. i think the strongest youll find in a FWD car from gm cept maybe the toronado
anyway it should work with your b/h but it has the older style external slave setup like the 282 i think. people have gotten those to work though. fiero guys use this trans with their 3.8 s/c and v8 swaps. check their forums for details and tips to working with it. good find but they are a bear to fix/upgrade i hear

Anyone helse have this done yet?? Anybody break any?? How much power are you guys running on them, is it possible for them to handle in excess of 400hp, or is anyone actually running that on them?? Cryotreating isnt too expensive for axles if that may be needed, says can improve strentgh up to 700%.

N and L bodies are different then J bodies....... as in width. I know the transmission is going to be bolted in the same place, but the width of the car is going to change the length of the axles. The L body (berretta/corsica) is a bit narrower then the 3rd Gen J...... thats why the axles are a bit shorter. Didn't have a N body laying around to check out........ I know the 99+ N bodies are wider, and the axles are longer..........
An axle search on Car-Part pairs the 2nd Gen J's with N bodies, and 92-96 Grand Am's and Achievas....... ONLY thing paired with 3rd Gens, are 3rd Gens........ (because the lengths are different)
If you use a shorter axle, it might all bolt in, but the your going to pull the CV joints apart, and stretch the boots........... IDK how much play are in those, and if it will cause them to fail faster.
That's what failed on our 3rd Gen axles.... the outer CV retainer ring shattered, and let the balls fall out of the joint. I have yet to see the shaft itself twist and snap (or maybe I did see a pic of Mike Karas's axle that twisted..... I cant remember) but usually its the CV's that fail. I know there are aftermarket axles out there, and that you can build stronger axles..... (maybe use the CV's from the HO's, and the shafts from the J-body...... or shafts of the same lenght...... or custom made ones..... IDK)
I am using outer 99+ CV's from a N body (to use with the front brakes) on other wise stock 00+ Getrag Axles on my '02 Z (all 3rd gen axles are the same, with the exception of 95-96 2 piece right axles)

Thanks brian, so will the HO outer CV's fit onto the axles i have for my 96? I have the same axle setup as the 2.3's, being i have 2 outer shafts that are the same length, and an intermediate shaft, from my understanding most 96's and 97-99 j's have one short one on the drivers side and a long one on the passenger for manual trannys, it seems the autos have the intermediate shaft as i do, becuase i had to buy one for an auto, the one they had stocked for manuals for 96 was a long shaft on the curb side. Does yours have the longer shaft?? Has anyone tried just cryotreating the outer cv's if thats a problem, i think if i remeber correctly that it was 75 an axle so cv's alone shouldnt be too bad.

from the factory, the 95 and 96 had the 2 piece pass. axle...... all aftermarket (and maybe factory) replacments are the 1 piece design. In 97 they went to the 1 piece pass. axle.
I'm not sure if the pieces can be swapped........ I do know the J axle snaps into the 99+ N body outer CVs. But being that the HO axles seem to be thicker, they might not be compatable.

Adler wrote:Oh I see. These DSS axles are not made for jackshafts.
That can't be changed? Changed over to the single one? I mean... why not. The transmission is the same right? So, just pop out that half shaft, remove any hanger or whatever is in the way (might require a sawzall), and put in the longer one. Anyone know if that would work? I have a 95 car, and the longer shaft is in it. But I did an auto to manual swap. So, I probably don't have whatever might be obstructing the longer shaft, that the manual 95/96 people have.
Possible?
I am not forsure if the transmission is the same. You might be able to take out the jackshaft to use the longer axle, but I am not forsure.
If it's not fast, juice it!!!
