Clipping a turbo?
Tuesday, October 11, 2005 9:52 AM
What are the benifits of clipping a turbo, and what are the drawbacks? I have a buddy with a first gen talon and his 20g was ported and clipped 10 deg. . Does anybody on the org have a clipped turbo? and did you notice a difference before and after you had it clipped?

Thanks
jeff

port and clip? more cfm and a quicker spool. that's about all there is to it.

Slower spool, better top end power.

Porting and clipping a turbine housing and wheel is basically to allow better exhaust flow resulting in better top end hp. The side effects are that is reduces turbine efficiency which mean slower spool / more turbo lag.

If you clip fins... I was under the impression they become lighter and therefore spool easier.

Clipping the fins is akin to raising the A/R ratio, but it absolutely destroys the efficiency of the turbine wheel. Clipping was popular years ago as a method to increase top-end flow of the turbo on DSM's when parts selection was limited, but the advent of more appropriate turbine wheels and housings has made this 'hacker fix' largely unneccesary.

While removing material from the wheel would make it lighter it doesn't have as much effect as the lost efficiency. The "port/clip" allows more room for exhaust gas to pass the turbine wheel without actually pushing it, thus the slower spool.
