wondering what's the difference between external and internal waistgates?
internal tends not to be as good as external. when boosting high numbers internal tends to spike versus you could change the spring on a external and it will hold better.

^^^^ what he said and internal is part of the turbo's turbine housing.. external is by its self. external is better for the simple reason it does not disrupt the exhaust frow out of the turbo so it will add a few ponies..
r.i.p rotary
Internal is NOT part of the turbine housing, which is why you can switch an internally gated turbo to an externally gated one. The flapper is part of the O2 housing, which is what scavanges the exhaust gases from the turbine.
An internal gate is an actuator bolted to the compressor housing, with a rod that attaches to a flapper on the O2 housing on the turbine side of the turbo. As boost pressure increases, the flapper opens, removing pressure from the turbine blades, and causing it to spin slower. An external gate is bolted on to the manifold, and releases exhaust gases before they get to the turbine, redirecting them back into the exhaust after the turbo, or dumping it through a tube under the car.
