Okay , I have the 2.2 and 2.4 trans. pulled apart and the 3rd and 4th gears swapped onto the 2.4 output shaft and the Quaife differential swapped in... BUT (maybe I miss understood this) I can't get the 2.2 input shaft and gears to mesh up right.
It looks like I'm going to have to swap 3rd and 4th gear from the 2.2 input shaft onto the 2.4 input shaft.
AND after checking the gear teeth count their are the SAME amount on both 2.2 and 2.4 2nd gear input and output making both transmissions have a gear ratio of 2.176 (17 teeth input and 37 teeth output). I thought 2.4 2nd gear was supposed to be 2.04?
So if any of you that have done this swap can clear any of this up it would be greatly appreciated...

Yeah...you cannot just swap the output shaft gears, you have to swap the 3rd and 4th gears from the input and the output shafts from the 2.2L to the 2.4L.
I did it all just before Christmas.

Thanks... It's all back together and seems to be working right. I'll know for sure when I get it in the car next month.
I didn't even have any left out parts.

Sounds like when I put in my 2.4 engine in I'm giong to have to use some of the 2.2 gears I have layin' around for the new transmission. Might need you to helpp me out with what all was done.
I am going to have some 2.2 gears lying around here shortly, and a complete set of 2.4 gears if anyone is interested.
I am swapping the SOHC geo 1st and 2nd gears into my 2.2 tranny.
I also have 2 older diffs with machined gears for sale. $200 each.

Dan,
I would be interested in the 2.2 gears, when they are available. 3rd and 4th specifically

Sure thing. I hope to do the swap over the next week or two. After that I will let you know what is left. I will put your down for the gears tho.... tenatively of course.
Would $100 be fair? you will need the input and output shaft 3rd and 4th gears... of course on the output shaft they are one piece.

Just for reference our 2.2 and 2.4 isuzu's have the same 2.176 2nd gear, the 2.043 gear you thought you had comes in a 90-93 storm or a 85-88 fiero.
Right, I am going to use the 91 SOHC 1st and 2nd with my 2.2. FD.
Not the 2.4 gears like I had originaly planned a couple months ago.

Sounds sweet, that should give a few more mph out of second gear. Can I ask which FDR you settled on?
Dan, how are the synchros on those 2.4L gear shafts? I may be interested in the 2.4L gearsets for some spare parts.
Thanks.

I am going to keep my 2.2 FD.
So its
1st SOHC geo
2nd SOHC geo
3rd my stock 2.2
4th my stock 2.2
5th my stock 2.2
FD my stock 2.2
Gives me about 7mph more in 1st and makes a nice even gearbox. And 4th will get me to 120MHP at 6k rpms....

Craig,
The synchros look pretty decent. I dont have a brand new one to compare them to however. I can take some nice closeups if you like. I should probably do that anyway so that people can see exactly what I have ect.
I think I should work up a new excel spreadsheet so that everyone can see how the stock 2.2 compares tothe stock 2.4, to a 2.4 with the 2.2 3rd/4th, to what I came up with ...
I will work on that now.

I think I have this figured out ( Dan and Craig correct me if I am wrong )
I am taking 1st and 2nd off of my 2.4 output shaft, and putting it on my Isuzu output shaft.
Then I am putting the 2.2 3/4 output gear goes on the same Isuzu output shaft
Next I can put in the entire 2.2 3/4 input shaft
Basically I am trying to put together a close ratio Isuzu trans with a 4.11 FDR
Thanks for the picture Dan.

uh, where do you get the 4.11 FDR from? I think I missed something. You cant just swap the output shaft without swapping the ring gear too i dont think. They wouldnt mesh right...
Or am I missing something else?

Dan, I sold him the Old 4.117 ring gear and the output shaft that matches it so he can have the 4.117 FDR.
Jason, It sounds good to me. 3rd and 4th from the 2.2, and then use the 1st, 2nd, and 5th from the 2.4L. Put all the output gears on the output shaft I sold you with the 4.117 FDR. You can use the input shaft from the 2.4L.

Ok gotcha.
Sounds like a good plan.
That 4.11 FD is gonna be something..
Id never get moving with that sucker..

Someone want to teach me a little bit about FDR's?
I just want to know what does the higher FDR do compared to a lower FDR? I know I should know this, but I just am having a difficult time conceptualizing this as I am sure many others who are afraid to ask are.

<img src="http://registry.gmenthusiast.com/images/jiggamon/avatar15569_2.gif">
RPM= (MPH x trans ratio x axle ratio x 336) / tire diameter
OR
MPH= (RPM x tire diameter) / ( trans ratio x alxe ratio x 336)
You can see in both cases the gear ratio is multiplied by the axle ratio (FDR), this is also equal to the torque multiplier. A higher tq multiplier means more effective tq to the wheels. Hence why the 2.2 cavys had a 3.91 first gear, to simply get the damn thing moving since there is no tq down low. Then they jump up quick to keep fuel economy at max.
The FD effects each gear some... its like the final tq multiplier.
Check out my little comparison post to
here
