The Question i need to know about is how do i get rid of that drop from neutral into gear on an auto tranny and the car just wines and don't go anywhere for awhile until the rpm's drop to about 1250.
97 Cavalier 2.2
what you doing on the launches.
I brake torque and my car takes off at about 3000k

lol omg it sounds like hes trying to do a neutral drop, but the transmission is saving itself by not allowing it to go into gear. LMAO. STOP DOING THAT!

Don't do that! Jamming an automatic into gear when you take off isn't the same thing as letting the clutch out on a manual. What you're doing is REALLY bad for your transmission.
What you want to be doing is put it in gear, jam the brake pedal to the floor, and put the throttle down as far as you can without the car moving forward. Wait until 5 seconds before the light turns green to do this, because it can overheat the transmission very easily. Then when it's time to go just let the brake pedal up.
they way i launch in a auto is push in the brake in drive and step on the gas and get the rpm's up to about 3k and when u take off just let off the brake and stomp on it
Yeah, neutral drops is what I use to do when I owned my 91 Grand am to warm up the tires not with the rpm's very high about 3500 but when I lunched on the tree I would hold the brake. I have been driving around a 77 nova with a 350 bla bla bla 400hp with a manual tranny, I owned a 99 cavalier but did not try to race it. I'm looking to try a new challenge with a car that's harder to sup up and race so i bought a 97 cavalier and plan on making it into a sweet mod car but i didn't know if the 4t40e could neutral drop or if it was a safety thing. live u learn
Neutral drops is about the worst thing to do to an auto! Fastest way to toast that tranny! This is true for any transmission. This places too much shock on the clutches and gears and will rip them right out, I've seen it done on many cars(FWD and RWD).
Brake torquing is the way to go, if not using a Trans Brake, be it by foot or with a line lock. I haven't seen any one making a Trans brake for FWD(could be wrong on this though), but line locks are universal, as is your left foot. A trans brake locks the tranny in multiple gears, wich locks the drive gears, and allows you to preload the torque converter, clutches and gears, no matter what staging RPM. When released it slips into first and off you go, like a bullit! Brake torquing does the same, but if the brakes aren't good you could slip tripping the lights
yea i have seen tranys get @!#$ up becuase dumb people neutral bomb it i think some cavys have like a saftey now to were it will like bobble a little bit then go so u don't blow any thing my g/f's only 97 cavy would bobble if u tried to n bomb it
As the others said, Neutral drops aren't a very good idea on any transmission. Eventually you will either blow something out, or it will just start slipping really bad - neither condition is very desirable
I can see where the logic comes from though - rev up the engine in neutral to the desired RPM, and then engage the transmission by dropping it in Drive - and off you go with a perfect launch. Almost like dropping the clutch on a manual.
Unfortunately it doesn't work that way though. Doing a Neutral drop can best be equated to jamming a manual transmission in gear, with the clutch out, from a stop. The load is all on the transmission internals, instead of on the clutch.
By brake torquing, as the others mentioned, the transmission is already in gear with power flowing though it, and you just control the launch using the Torque Converter, like you would use a clutch in a manual. That way the load is on the TC, instead of on the transmission gears/clutches/bands.
Practice your brake torque technique, and good luck at the track

I destroyed a transmission in a chevy tracker doing neutral drops. Since I've had my cavalier I've only done it a few times, when i get real pissed off, lol.
The way to do it though, if you reeeaaaalllly have to know is: put it in neutral and hit the gas to flip the rpms up (as high as you want) then make sure ur foot is off the gas and drop it into drive and slam back on the gas before the rpm needle drops the whole way back. If you hit the gas up to about 6000 it will be at about 4500 when u finally get back on the gas.
By doing this, you will bypass the down time that is a safety feature I guess in these cars. If you don't do it right though, u'll be sitting at the line for about 3 secs till u get going. If you do do it QUICK, its @!#$ crazy and you can really burnout. But seriously, I am not recommending anyone does this!
