well im pretty sure its my syncros that are f-ed up cuz its getting to be a chore to shift. so can i take it to a mechanics, if so will it cost me an arm and a leg or any other ideas on what i could do? thanks
my 2nd and 3rd gear syncos went..... $2700 with a new clutch and new shifting forks included with $475 labor and both syncros....
Well if your syncro's are going out, it should be grinding gears when trying to shift, even with the clutch all the way in.
If its not grinding at all, but just hard to move the gear shift lever, then chances are its not your syncros at all. It could just be that it is cold out and the transmission gear oil is too thick. Thats simple to fix, just drain the old oil out and refill it with Mobil 1 Synthetic gear oil, problem solved
However, if it is in fact grinding/vibrating badly when you are trying to shift, then most likely it is your syncros that have gone bad. As CraZ-24 said, it can be very costly to replace the syncros.
Clarify exactly what the symptoms are, and perhaps we can be of more help

i have this problem, but me, it is my 3rd gear and it only grind when i shift at 6000rpm+ from 2nd gear to 3rd! other wise when i shift at say 3000rpm, it is not grinding!!!
is this my synchro????
thanx!
ya mine dont grind all the time, but noramlly its 2nd and 3rd if there is any grinding, it happens in lower rpm's. but ill go to shift in to 3rd or smethnig and ill have to like lean weight into it jsut to get it to go. but it jsut stange cuz its not all the time.
The synchros in the Getrag suck...I am willing to bet you have one going bad if it is grinding. If it is just tough to put it into gear, that is not a synchro going bad. My isuzu has had that problem since day 1...3rd is a bitch sometimes. I used to miss that gear all the time because of it...then I put in the B&M, and for some reason, it did not do it any more..
Magik: Don't shift at 6000rpm. That was easy.

you want me to shift at 3k when racing???
where are you racing? Hopefully at the track. Don't know what to tell ya man, I dont run my 2.4L up past 5k rpm until I get the new motor in there with the better oil system. I am not taking any chances at spinning a bearing as it is my daily driver.

yeah, i'm also waiting for my new engine this summer. I would also like to convert to 2.3l oi pump swap! but i have to shop around first and find someone that will machine my block for not too much expensive!!!!
how did it cost you?
let me know, thanx!
It cost me the 2.3L parts...which I got for $90 + $50 in hardware from GM.
The labor was free as I did it myself. The machine shop is pressure testing everything to make sure the sleeve won't leak, etc and they are charging $30 for that.
So around $170 in parts and the testing.

do you have a how to with pictures?
my friend has access to machine shop but dont know what to do exactly!
thanx!
there are a few how-to's with pictures, etc in the performance forum. Search around a bit and you should be able to find all the information you need. nyj-bodies.org has a little write up as well.
