I just got a Fly Wheel out of the wreakers, it looks like it hasn't been used in a while, it has some rust on the grabing surface. Do i have to get this turned like a brake rotor, or can i do it at home with some sand paper.
P.S. Is the Fly Wheel out of a 2.3 the same as a 2.4?? i took it out of a 95 sunfire 2.3 , its going into a 99 Z24 2.4
thanks in advance
Well first of all I dont know if it will work on a 2.4L. I have not interchanged those parts ever before.
Second, you need to take it in and have it re-surfaced by a machine shop.

The 2.3 flywheel is not the same as a 96-99 2.4 flywheel. The 2.3 and 00-02 flywheels are flat as the 96-99 are stepped. The flywheel will work on your car, but you need to change your clutch to either a 2.3 or 00-02 2.4 clutch.
Craig is right, you will definitely need your flywheel resurfaced. Sand paper won't cut it

i thought all the flywheels from 95-99 were the same because they all had the isuzu tranny..... the flywheel i got has those raised 1 inch lips along the edge. also i found this on ebay, it says its a clutch for a 2.3/2.4 so that would make the flywheel the same right?
It was off a 95 2.3L sunfire...bad year for that engine....a transitional year. It may have been the stepped flywheel for the isuzu tranny after all. I dont know what they used that year since the 2.3L that year seemed to be a mix between the old style 2.3L and the newer 2.4L motor. Hell, GM might not even know.
Regardless, you still need to have it resurfaced.

here it is, its out of a 95 sunfire 2.3L and it be used in 96-99 isuzu's (2.4)??
It looks just like my 99 isuzu flywheel. That thing definately needs to go to the machine shop to be re-surfaced. yuck.

yeah it was dirty when i took it out of the sunfire..........but i left it outside and the snow got to it...oppps
does anyone know how much re-surfacing costs? and is it only done at a machine shop?
sorry, not trying to hijack the original post, but has anyone has any luck with shaving weight off of a stocker flywheel when machining it? Heard about drivability issues with the 8lb alum piece (fidanza, spec2, etc.) for daily driving..my car sees little to none track/comp use....right now im runnin a stock iron one with a centerforce ...already bought a d/f, and if I can get a few pounds taken off the stock flywheel when I install the d/f for some quicker revs, would be great. or, better, anyone right now running an 8lber with a d/f? any comments/thoguths/suggestions would be great. 1000 thanks, guys.
once again, sorry ivan...but yes, definitely have that flywheel machine professionally...i had a friend who thought he could grind his civic wheel at home, and wound up warping it.
spent $450.00 on a new one.
