was just curious if im doin a 1/4 mile and i shift in an auto (cause in drive the damn traction control kicks in) seems to be alot faster but will this eventually screw my transmission up? and of coarse im shifting before redlining

it won't help you in any way and can possibly damage your transmission (although I've seen no evidence)

You can shut your traction control off by pulling up the e brake one notch.

i've played around with my automatic a little bit, and the only time I can see that it would help to not just stick it in drive is when your starting off the line. i could be wrong, but down in one the car is a lot more "torqeu-ey". but your getting the best shifts in drive your ever going to get, so i can see maybe popping it in one, flooring it, and immediately sliding it into overdrive (D). just my two cents...

It won't hurt your tranns, in manual first your trans is stronger the it is in drive. It should hurt the trans less, unless you are neutral dropping it.

Before any one ask why it is stronger it is because in stead of first being applied by the low/reverse and hydraulically, you all so have the low roller clutch holding. So you have a extra mechanical advantage.

Cool i never knew that about the traction control, One of the reasons i had asked is because when you floor it or punch it 3/4 the engine just seems to rev if your in drive, although in 1st it just picks right up and even if it picks right up in drive which isnt always the case sometimes its sloppy in between 1st-2nd and 2nd-3rd sometimes not switching till like 6500-7000 rpms on the tack. im not sure if a B&M shiftkit would fix this or not ive never dealt with one? I also know i have a healthy transmission and theres alot of other ppl that have this problem with my car not sure if its just my year or the z24's in general ive read a few posts on it though in the past

A manual down shift will not cause any more excessive heat then a TCM down shift. Manual down shifting should not hurt any thing.

i do the same thing to my auto off the line. i put it in 1st, and when i go i slam the gas, let it redline, then shift to 2nd, let it redline, then shift to 3rd and let it redline. by about the end of 3rd gear i am either to the end of the trap or i am to the next light / intersection or i caught up to traffic.

in an auto, I feel that you do not speed up faster if you were to punch it off the line. Better to go a little more than half and when it reach 15 miles per hour, punch it.

floor it biznitch, when i auto stick my 4 speed i floor it when i get up to 39mph and let go of the gas quick pop it in 2nd slam the gas again and it hits the gear hard it feels like power shifting

Agree, you can't shift faster than your car can with an auto. Just not possible, it knows when to shift at the correct point, not you. But try it out at the track. Then tell us what you came up with.

actually and technically it can o damage...

reasons.

1) most people arent perfect, and like stated, unless you have a damaged tranny already you're not gonna be more accurate or faster than the auto tranny is.

2) auto transmissions shift with pressure (some electronically controled). when pressure occurs, temps rise....aka tranmission fluid gets hot. and unless anyone has a temp guage specifically for tranny fluid temp, i can garuntee that many of you are going way over 200 degrees F. 175-195 is the operating range for tranny fluid. any performance or reg transmission place will tell you that, its also in the GM shop manual for these cars... with that being said, every 20 degrees over 195, you half the life of the fluid. and since most people dont do transmission oil and filter changes as they should, it damages transmission. heat is the main killer of auto transmissions.

http://www.niehoff.com/techtips/trans.html

3) clutches and bands. keep in mind if they are stock, its a reason why they are called stock bands and clutches. not made for flooring the car and trying to shift it. for that it would be beneficial to upgrade the bands and clutches to be able to handle more pressure and power. same goes for the torque converter (not needed, but reccomended on the Tq converter)

4) gm made these trannys to maybe tow something light, but when you tow something you arent flooring the engine and racing it as most do.

5) with the possibility over overheating the fluid, which causes oxidation and wears the seals (excessive heat will do this) i doubt many are running tranny coolers nor even know their tranny temps.
