Does anybody know what tranny the SS uses? I know ours uses getrag but i need to know if the SS uses a different one cuz i may be in the process of swappin the 2.0 into my car and want to know if i would need the transmission from it to.
Thanks
why are you dropping down displacement when you can get a S/C kit or turbo kit and make way more HP and cost about the same or less doing it?

if this is the case then GM would have used the 2.2 eco in their drag car.. the 2.0 comes from the factory VERY strong but is gimped by the low redline it was given. it should be stable at much higher rpms..
but to answer the question, no you dont HAVE to change the trans. the 2.0 eco and 2.2 eco blocks are very similar and have the same bellhousing.
Sven you totally quarterloafed your computer..
It is probably the same damn block. They just added some oil cooling, changed the sleeves, and other minute mods.

The cobalt ss tranny is built a little better and will accomodate more power

I have bare blocks if anyone wants one.

I was looking to find out this very information the other day. I researched their site
http://www.chevrolet.com/ and there's just some goofy code... No Getrag or whatever else you might expect to see but just...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Chevy Cavalier - MM5 (<-- Same Code!!!)
Gear ratios
First gear 3.58
Second gear 2.02
Third gear 1.35
Fourth gear 0.98
Fifth gear 0.69
Reverse 3.31
Final drive 3.94
Case material aluminum
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Chevy Cobalt - MM5 (<-- Same Code!!)
Gear ratios
First gear 4.05
Second gear 2.02
Third gear 1.35
Fourth gear 0.98
Fifth gear 0.69
Reverse 3.31
Final drive 3.94
Case material aluminum
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Code stays the same, however the gear ratio for 1st gear is different. Now spell assume for me.
You think they would have just changed the final drive gear. Why just the 1st gear? Our cars seem to have plenty of power there.
same block different crank to get the lower displacement
id take the tranny from the ss
its stonger
and geared better
These are the gear ratios for the cobalt from GM's website (link below)
GM
Type: Getrag F23/M865-speed manual, front-wheel drive (Base, LS)
Gear ratios (:1):
First: 3.58
Second: 2.02
Third: 1.35
Fourth: 0.98
Fifth: 0.69
Reverse: 3.32
Final drive ratio: 3.58:1
--------------------------------------
Type: Hydra-Matic 4T45-E4-speed automatic w/overdrive, front-wheel drive (LT)
Gear ratios (:1):
First: 2.96
Second: 1.62
Third: 1
Fourth: 0.86
Fifth: –
Reverse: 2.14
Final drive ratio: 3.63:1
---------------------------------------------------
Type: FPG F355-speed manual, front-wheel drive (SS Supercharged)
Gear ratios (:1):
First: 3.38
Second: 1.76
Third: 1.18
Fourth: 0.89
Fifth: 0.7
Reverse: 3.17
Final drive ratio: 4.05:1
That what I though! They are using less powerful gears because the engine is stronger.
So, you should find the other trans and just have it freshened up with better componets.
the maximum displacement allowed in the class that they run in is 2.0 liters. thats why they dont use a 2.2. the cobalt motor has a stronger crank and rods, tranny is beefed up too.
1st Gear ratio for cavalier
First gear 3.58
1st gear ratio for cobalt ss supercharged
First gear 4.05
That's the only thing that's different. Use 1st gear much? If not, then you won't notice much difference at all in the cobalt. It uses the same junk, rattling junkrag transsmission as a cavalier uses.
Ok, I see that the specs are the same, but are the gears "made" any better to handle more power. For instance, someone who buys the SS is more then likely going to make it faster. Wouldn't GM account for this in building the transmission. I don't know but I just find it hard to believe that almost an identical transmission is put into an econo car est at 145 Hp is the same as a stock car at 205HP but more then likely will eventually be pumping out upperwards of 300HP with mods and such. Just a thought. Anyone?
The 3rd gen J-body's and lower level cobalts all use the Getrag F23, while the Cobalt SS and Ion RL use the F25. These 2 tranny's are VERY different, the only parts that are interchangeable are the diffs (and thus the LSD's available). The eco block will accept either of these tranny's as the bellhousing's bolt pattern are the same, but be aware that the F23's also came on 2.4's, and the bell housing bolt pattern is different on these (most should know this, but I'll put it incase).
15.3 @ 89.97mph, 14's on the way?
