Auto Trans, Manual Shift Q's...
Tuesday, July 19, 2005 7:20 PM
I have a 2000 cavi 2200 3-speed auto.

Is it bad for me to "manually shift" the car?

Is it bad to put the car in nuetral at almost all stops?

Also, is it possible that when I do manually shift, I get more torque? I dont wanna get flamed but it does feel like it has more power.

If you drive the thing like a manual, what was the point of paying the extra $800 for the auto trans...?

Driving an auto like a manual is bad. The computer determines when to shift, and if you keep switching gears and what not, it could mess up. I don't see why you'd shift into neutral either at every stop.

who took a pissed in your cornflakes?^^

it doesnt harm a thing as long as you dont bag it. there is no point in leaving it in neutral(neutral drops will harm the tranny). there is no extra torque.

maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow....... but some day

Manually up shifting not sure on harm if any. Manually down shifting is very bad on our transmissions. Putting in neutral at stops, i am not sure, probably does not harm it, JUST DO NOT REV IT THEN PUT IT IN DRIVE. Put in drive before you give it gas. Neutral slamming is by far one of the worst things you can do to an auto transmission.

i used to keep my moms cavy in neutral at the lights but once i wanted to "go" at green with the guy and when i put it in drive and then floored it seamend like it was kill my engine and it was engaging and disengaging a lot i guess the computer didn't know what to do, they're not made for this so i wouldn't do that.Buy a manual

It's certainly not recommended to shift it all the time... once in a while won't kill it, but all the time is going to.

Neutral isn't bad per se.. but what's the point? You're defeating the purpose of the stall converter.

DON'T use the tranny to downshift to slow down going down hills. Just use your brakes... $100 tops for brakes is way cheaper and easier than $1500 for a new tranny.

I didn't mean to give an attitude if you thought I was. I just don't understand why you'd pay the extra $800 for an automatic trans, yet drive it as close to a manual as possible.

If you're wanting to drive like manual, you should get one (but that's not practical now, you're not rich ;O).

Not everyone buys their car from a dealer or brand new. Alot of times people have to take a great deal for a daily driver or are given a car by a parent/guardian.

Like myself, I didn't buy an manual cause 1) I didn't know how to drive a manual at the time & 2) I wasn't heavily into cars at that time to care which one I bought.

As far as what "The Sandy One" asked, no, don't shift your car. It might feel like you have more torque because your staying in gear longer and your RPMs drop slow, so if you drive up to 5000 RPMs and take your foot off and it drops to 3000 and punch it again it feels like you have more power but in reality it feels like that cause your still in your powerband (somewhat). In an auto it would shift when you take your foot off the gas and be at a lower rpm.

Thanks for the input.

I have an auto because at the time of purchase i knew nothing about cars... like, i seriously didnt know the difference between the tire and the rim.

Thats also why my car is tan and has 4 doors... when I bought it I didnt care.

That's my same reason except I would never buy a tan 4 door car LOL j/k

I litterally didn't know anything about cars before I bought my car and started going on the org...
