Odd problem.......
Monday, August 15, 2005 3:05 PM
Well what can I say, my 2000 is in excellent condition except for 1 thing.... My tranny sounds like it is giving its final breaths of life. Symptoms ? Shifting is sloppy, When I switch gears, like going from 1st to 2nd after I am done my shift, and as I am accelerating I hear a low grinding noise.. very subtle and only heard when the ac is off and my system is turned down. I also have a weird dead noise between shifts, as if it is still going and spinning while shifting gears, not a normal noise. I received the car at a excellent price, 7k Canadian $ for a 2000 z24 with 88km's so any repair costs will easily still justify the pruchase. I can notice the low end grinding noise when in 5th @ a low rpm say around 1800rpm to 2400rpm.

-All problems were from the previous owners abuse. a 20 year old who treated her like garbage.

-I plan on bringing the car in to my mechanic @ the end of the month and getting the problem fully diagnosed. BUT any input now is extremely important.

Help would be great !

drain the fluid and check for metal............. or at least check the fluid level. Replace with B&M Shift Plus (auto fluid) or Saturn Manual Transmission Lubricant P/N 21018899.

Good luck.

I recently had the fluid changed about 3 month ago when I purchased the car, no luck after that, I also tried soaking up all the clutch fluid and swapping in DOT 4, Tranny Conditioner etc etc.. N luck as of yet."

(yes it is a getrag.)

It sound to me like its worn out. the dog teeth and the helical gears are just worn. I know not much help but I think your only option is a new tranny or rebuilding it.
