ok, i just got off the phone with a vavoline rep about how much they'd charge to change my tranny. the lady said that for the 99 auto cav, if theres no tranny dipstick they cant change it because its sealed, meaning GM only can service them-plus if it has the sealant it has a fluid life up to 100,000. now if there is a dipstick then they can change it. i didnt know about this situation, maybe others know of it, but im new to the j-body scene. is it possible to change the tranny with the sealant or do i have to wait for either 100,000 and/or go to a GM dealership?
Vavoline Price:
Trans fluid change-59.99
Trasn Flush-99.99
o and im at work right now, i cant go and check myself until 4ish, else i'd get my nice work clothes dirty.
john lenko seems to know about the transmissions. and event too. check with those guys
my magnaflow decal gives me 100 hp!
they are using a flushing tool that sucks the fluid out of the dipstick tube and then fills it through the tube. You can pull the pan off and drain it like that and just refill it after you put the pan back on.
my brother replaced his fluid by removing the pan, changed the filter too (very important) and reinstalled the pan with the factory gasket. Make sure the place that changes the fluid reuses the factory gasket, its very thick and wont leak. When you add the tranny fluid, there is a check screw that you have to remove. Fill the tranny fluid with the car on the lift and have someone else be at the bottom to wait for it to start dripping from the check screw. Once there is some smooth dripping, that means the tranny is full and ur done. Install check scew, and tighten oil cap.
Doesnt sound like the valvoline joint knows anything about this, so take it somewhere else.
2003 Cavalier 2dr. 5spd
the 4spd autos are the sealed trannies , and susposed 100k service
if they are doing a flush the normal way they disconnect the trans cooler line and use the trans to pump out the old fluid and which also pushs the new fluid in
there is a sight plug on the side of the trans that you can check the level with , but the car has to be running and level , and there is a red cap on the top of the trans for fluid fill
I work at an oil lube place here in Tn and we actually can't do a trans service on Cavaliers because they do have sealed transmission as far as dip sticks go and things.
We can't do it because our machine isn't designed to work with the sealed trans for some reason, I haven't really checked into it. They may be in the same situation.

still shouldnt be an issue.... the lines that go into the rad, thats what they disconnect....sealed or not...
nothing really is sealed. not like an egg or something, where if you open in you cant close it.
3 speed autos have a dipstick, the 4 speeds, as said by eric, JDMCAV, have a drain plug and cap. either way a place with the machine can do the job, unless they simply dont want to.
ah ic, thanks guys for the input
soo, i'm guessing the factory is using synthetic dexron/mercon V????
my sis't car is ~80,ooo miles now & will look for the check plug. Does any1 here know how many quarts does it take to just to a refill after a pan gasket/filter change??? 97 2.2L
I just wanna be prepared when she rolls close to 100k....
i dont konw about you guys but....just the other day i dropped my trans pan (96 sunfire gt) and changed the filter/fluid.
anyway, that was way off topic - the point was that there is no dipstick in those. just the fill on the top, drain on the bottom front and check drain plug on the right....if you're looking from the hood.
