99 Z24 Manual Tranny... options???
Tuesday, August 30, 2005 8:13 AM
I have had this rattling sound on and off over the past few months (or year?), and yesterday my speedometer/odometer went haywire and stopped working altogether... then the CEL came on, and my car stalled in the parking lot at work today. So I got on the forums and searched for the speedometer issues and found out that my differential (and maybe whole tranny) is probably shot. So...

I have a 1999 Z24, manual transmission. I guess this is the Isuzu tranny? What options are out there for (almost) direct replacements? Are there any better-then-stock options out there? I'd like to find out what I need so I can order parts before the car quits completely.

BTW I did search, but got really confused with the different transmissions on J-bodys...

Thanks

99 is the Isuzu tranny. Why do you assume it is your differential that is out? Was there grinding and popping noises from the tranny? Generally a CEL light wouldn't have anything to do with your tranny having issues on a manual car. Does the car still run?

Well I'm not 100% sure... but I'd like to know what options I have ahead of time. I travel extensively for work and I rely on this car more then anything, so I'd rather order a transmission just-in-case then have to wait for one in an emergency.

I am away in VT right now with no equipment to check it out myself... I managed to book an appointment at a GM dealership out here to get it checked but that isn't till Friday.

The only signs I have are a rattling sometimes while idle, which seems to be coming from the transmission/differential towards the passenger side of the car, along with sporadic loss of VSS (barely worked at all yesterday, but haven't seen problems at all today). It also dropped below idle speed a couple times yesterday at stop signs (went down to like 100-500 RPM, felt like it was going to stall then jumped back up). And for the longest time it's seemed to make kinda a low tone rubbing/grinding noise when I do my aggresive turn in the parking lot... but this might just be the fact that I have snow tires on

Anyway I just want to know what options there are for replacing the manual Isuzu tranny just in case it's dying.

Sounds more like you have computer problems than tranny problems truthfully. If your diff was out, you wouldn't be able to go or turn.

The stalling problem can be either the Throttle Position Sensor and or the Idle Air Control Valve both on the throttle body.....have those checked first

Ok i am having the same issue with my 99z manual, i KNOW my tranny is dying and i want something else easy to swap in without too much extra work. a getrag out of a 2000+ cav maybe? or someone said something about the old NVT trannies out of 2nd gen cav's ?

I just got around to inspecting the tranny, and it doesn't look good. It seems like it's been leaking fluid out of one of the half-shaft oil seals, and the dipstick was reading low. I took the VSS out and there were a few shavings around the sensor head, but the body was covered in shavings... the rear body is a magnet, I'm assuming the magnet is there to make it double as a scum catcher? By "covered" I mean it was completely saturated like it wasn't possible to fit anymore crud over the magnetic portion.

I looked in the VSS hold and there were 2-3 shavings visible on the output gear. I'm going to try fishing for more with a magnet, then doing a flush and fill. Meanwhile, it's definately looking like the tranny is dying and I'd again I'd like to know what options there are for replacing the manual Isuzu transmission. Like Phoenix said, is it easy to put a Getrag in there? Is there anything else worth swapping it with? Are we better of just getting the tranny rebuilt?

Phoenix has the same car I have so you'd be helping two guys at once

Keep in mind, the 2000+ Getrag transmissions rattle like crazy at low RPMs (and often at idle). The sound is loud and is like pennies in a tin can. They operate flawlessly, just an annoying rattle that can be mostly cured by overfilling (2.6 qt instead of 1.8) with a synthetic ATF. Just a heads up for you guys.

I found this out AFTER buying a used 01 Z24...another lesson learned the hard way.

To me, a rebuild sounds like the best option...

Yeah after doing a lot of searching I think a rebuild is what I'll do, since the Getrag seems to have just as many issues.

After seeing a few links like this: http://www.isuzuperformance.com/isupage/tech/myths.html#gmtrans it looks like it might be wise to harden the components while I'm at it. What works best for this, heat treating or cyro? Or is there a 3rd party vendor for beefed up parts? Also, I read somewhere that GM has a rebuild kit for this... does anyone know what is included in the kit?

Once again it's a Manual tranny... I keep stating this because a lot of threads talk about the "Isuzu" tranny but they fail to mention Auto or Manual, which makes searching hard
