Yank Converter Slipping OMG

thats right folks. Trans has less than 200 miles on it and the torque converter is not engaging at all . even under normal acceleration. I think I may have gotten a deffective one. Everything on the trans is brand spanking new. not remanufactured. I am ready to put a bullet in my head right after i start the car on fire first. I cant take this pos anymore. someone please buy this car or i am going to make it dissapear. NO JOKE.

I doubt it's the TC. Is the car moving at all? Does it rev up then move? Was the tranny rebuilt? If it wasn't rebuilt it may be too much strain on the clutches and band. If it was the clearances are too loose on the clutches and band.

Did the shop grind the side gears for the 0.003-0.005" clearance as in the Instructions See Fig. 4A..

thanks soul horse. I emailed them to get a replacement but haven't heard anything yet.
Guess what happened to me. I bought a trans off of ebay. 4t40e ok cool right? nope it was a bellhousing off of a saturn L series not a 2.4 . So with my car at a local shop thinking I am just doing a change over from one to the other, I end up having to take both trans' to a specialist who pulled out all the internals from one into the other. I slapped on the yank converter and had the local shop reinstall the 2.4 trans with the L series trans parts and the yank converter. I thought that was all. Until this. I got a good deal from my local shop for the changeover . 350.00 usd.
300.00 more for the specialist to swap internals. 250.00 yank converter. And 500.00 saturn L series trans.
Now another 350.00 for the trans to get pulled again at the shop. lol I love this car so much.

that blows man but that brings up a good topic. does any know how much power the stock trannys can hold. people are making more and more power. so whats the most they can hold no one has any factual numbers.

If its not the converter than I don't know how in the heck I managed to break two of them so far. I hope thats all it is. My car is not making that much power. Maybe 230 whp .

whats the issue there?

DRmyZ24, like said above, i;d def double do the bands and clutches... if anything run em a bit tight as wear will occur.

I have yet to pull it apart since my mechanic is sick as a dog. I will be looking into it next week and that will determine whether or not I am parting my car out or not.

Sorry to hear it dude... that's insane how much that trans cost ya... I just sold my used 4T40E for $100...

Anyway.. if you want... you can come park it at my house... seems cars always get destroyed here... mine was broken into 5 times in a year, jumped on, spray painted, doused in gas, lit on fire, etc... Just last night, another car got jumped on.. hood and roof caved in, mirrors broken off. It's a nice place to live

i build torque converters and have for 11 years, i know Mike Senia at Yank, hes the best builder in the world and thats no joke. (GM listens to him.) is your pump shaft installed? if you look at the input shaft the oil pump shaft is the smallest innermost shaft. if thats not engaged or its broken you'll have no movement. does it go in reverse? if so the converter is working. how much fluid have you put in? should take 8 or 9 quarts minimum to make it move. also check your selector switch on the trans. who built the trans? a used 4t40 on ebay is scary, as for power that the 4t40 can handle, the answer is .... not much! its an economy oriented trans made to get good gas mileage. theres nothing you can do to it to make it stronger, as for a 5 speed conversion you have to swap a 5 speed computer into it along with a COMPLETE WIRING HARNESS. yes a complete harness. the trans runs off of throttle position sensors, temp sensors, speed sensors. you cant start cutting any wires or just leave them hanging if they no longer have anywhere to get plugged in. your car will run terrible if it runs at all. i work in a trans shop, let me know if you need some help on finding a good shop in your area.

i sent you an email kyle . thanks for the awesome post. and screw that five speed swap thats too much work. i thought i could just swap over the pcm and that it would basically be it as far as the computer went. Thanks again and yes i would love to know of a good shop in the chicagoland area.

You guys do any 5 speed work?

I have a 90 Getrag from a 3.1 5 speed Cavalier that needs an LSD installed into it.

I live in Poplar Grove, which is about 20 minutes directly west of you.

I drive though Woodstock all the time.
