I have a '98 Z and the spider gears are toast. I'm debating whether I should buy a used trans from a junkyard or something OR rebuild the tranny.
Suggestions?
...ok, I JUST had my tranny rebuilt. It was expensive.
If you are gonna do the work yourself, rebuild it. The spider gears, brass rings, master cylinder, and rear main seal cost me (thru a tranny shop who undoubtedly marked it up) about $600.00. The labor (including installing my new clutch, flywheel, phantom grip, and short shifter) was almost $1,000.00. You can find a used tranny from a junkyard for maybe $300.00 or so, but we wont know what kinda shape thatll be in...so it is your call.

oh, and to answer your post, i am unaware of any high quality spider gears. however, i think spotabee or event or someone has cryo treated gears, makes em stronger. ask them.

You can use the spider gears from an Isuza Impulse/Geo Storm tranny as they are the same but made from stronger metal than the J ones. Search for the exact years/models you can use, it's in here somewhere.

I tried searching but couldn't find exactly what trannies match a 98 Z.
To specify what's going on: My tranny is shot ATM. I checked the dipstick and saw shavings, assuming it's the spider gears. Now, I'm probably going to end up looking for a used tranny to use a temporary replacement while I rebuild mine with higher quality internals... I just don't know where to find those.
So, I just need a list of vehicles that have the same transmisson so I can go check local junkyards, etc, for a temp trans.
To test if it is the spider gears, jack the front end up till both wheels are in the air, leave the tranny in gear, and spin one wheel. The other wheel should spin in the opposite direction. If it doesn't, then probably is the spider gears.
Spider gears are really easy to Look at, Have a catch pan ready for fluid. if you don't know how to look at them yet. I just got done tearing my tranny apart and tightening up a bolt on the lower spider gear for gears 2nd, 3rd, and Rev. Seemed to help, but I forgot to pinch the nut on, and I think it possibly has worked loose agian. But I won't know better til tomorrow. Shavings could have been from every day wear as well. I know mine showed some shavings on it when I pulled out the dip stick, but when I cracked it open I didn't see where the spiders looked bad. Good luck!
