Tranny upgrade.
Sunday, October 02, 2005 11:35 AM
Hey guys. Do you have any tips on a good manual tranny swap for a 97 cavalier z24 to withstand highspeed drag conditions (above what the Governor-speed limiter- allows) and lots of horsepower? I already descided on what I want to do in the engine to enforce it a bit for the 22 psi of turbo it will run on. I had a couple friends help me on several engine upgrades, now i need to get into the tranny for my car to last the amount of power it will hold. any ideas?

From what I've read the Isuzu tranny is generally stronger. You could aslo look for treated internals that have been hardened. I don't really know wtf I'm talking about because everyone yells "SEARCH!" at you, but I think I'm on the right track.

the 2.4 guys need to use the New Venture 5 speed trans found in the 2.3 HO cars from 92-94. its almost a drop in replacement and its WAY stronger and actually shifts well. talk to anyone who has done this mod, they are very happy. just one example..

You say it's almost a direct swap. What needs to be done to do the swap?

Not to ba complete dick but do a quick search I posted what was needed way back in July, and there is a bit of information from 2 other ppl who have done the swap hanging around in the archives.

When the car was running this transmission was much MUCH smoother, the H.O axles are a lot better for torque steer and launching / wheel hop... and the overall transmission just feels like it's a quality piece unlike the i@!#$zu.

Good riddance to THAT tranny.

Oh, and BTW, I just searched for that post and it is gone, Dave didn't archive it, sorry. The most informative thread I found leaves much to be answered, and all links to other posts are now dead. And funny thing, I searched for awhile and any thread I DID find where people where asking questions about this particular swap, I see you posting in there telling them to search. Well let me tell you, there are no more active or archived threads left to search for, someone needs to post all the info needed and post pics as well and we'll ask Dave to either sticky it, or archive it.

LOL i knew 2 people in peoria, il alone that had done this mod. so it is definately more than just 3. the nvg has been put in many 3rd gens now (think Q4 swaps). highrev had a great way of altering the one mount jobby to get it to line up and actually be a direct swap mount-wise. they may be a good resource for pics if they have them.

Thanks for that post. But I also noticed there are no references to NVG-T550 in the title (and to search post content takes forever on 56K).

Well, I'll still have nothing to do with anymore I@!#$zu trannies, cause this is gonna be the 3rd time changing the trans. Once because of a grenaded diff, the other two for wiped syncros. Too bad a Quaiffe diff won't help the syncros live. I can't wait to install my NVG-T550 tommorrow, since I barely got to work today (the car is still there cause I couldn't even grab a gear to leave the parking lot).

wow, the cases are almost identical except for the pad for the throwout bearing (I got the NVG-T550 with an external slave) But I'm getting the bugs worked out and I'll post up a new thread about it when I'm done.

Re: Tranny upgrade.

Shoulda gone with the internal slave.

Stock front mount, NVG rear mount.. custom brackets for the shift linkage, and use the NVG throwout.

Goodluck.

Nope, don't have to do that, the mount points are exactly the same, and I dunno if you know this, but you can pull the shift lever assembly off the Izuzu and bolt it to the NVG, no need to modify or custom make brackets. And I have another trick up my sleeve for the throwout bearing, you'll see

Re: Tranny upgrade.

the trick for the trowout bearing didn't work as well as I had planned, so I went to plan b. oh well, at least it's running now.
