Spec Stage 2 problems - Transmission Forum

I had a spec Stage 2 installed about 2 weeks ago, and it's not been right since installed. First thing, is that the pedal feels like there's a springy notch about 1/3 of the way down, just after the the clutch is fully disengaged. after that point, the pedal goes right to the floor, with very little effort. Second, the pedal, if pushed past that point, is very freluctant to come back up until it gets to the top 1/3 then it snaps right back up. If i push it 1/2 down, it will stay there, and i either have to take my foot completely off or push it to the floor to get it to come back. The installer has bled the clutch again this morning, which made no difference whatsoever. The installed had also noticed that the fingers on the pressure plate when it ewas installed were almost flat, and said that when i push the pedal it may actually be pulling the fingers in past which would cause the notchy feel and most likely the cause of the poor pedal return.
Anyway, i've been in contact with Spec, and lemme tell you that I'm not to happy with the options that they've presented me with, so i'm going to call them again today and see what i can get worked out.
It's a 99, 2.2 with the isuzu 5spd. If anyone else has a stage 2 from Spec, id appreciate to hear from you.
Thanks guys
Trevor

Let me know what options they gave you cause I have been having issues with mine as well. The notch thing and when I start to release it starts to engage but wont fully engage till it gets to the top.

Well, so far, they've told me that I can send the clutch in for a warranty inspection, but I'll have to pay to uninstall and reinstall the clutch, even if it's found defective, which i don't think is right. I wouldn't have to pull it and reinstall it if their product wasn't defective. Anyway, i've got someone looking into this at Spec, so hopefully i can get them to foot the bill for the extra labour, only other option is to remove the clutch myself send it to them and reinstall it when it comes back. The other thing is that they want the flywheel too, which means that even if i wanted to just uninstall it and go with a different clutch altogether, i gotta buy a flywheel too. Anyway, we are still workin stuff out so, i'll give them the benefit of the doubt before i go and start to really bitch.
I'll keep this thread updated as i get new info

I have a SPEC stage 2, but on a getrag. No issues whatsoever... but I installed it myself so I know it was done right
The only thing is I KNOW I put mine in right no doubt about that. If My only problem with that option is my car cant be down that long. I dont have an oem clutch to put back in mine got fried.

well if your mechanic bled the clucth and its still acting like this, I'd be looking into a new master cylinder. If your pedal isn't coming back, or comes back slowly..there's not much there to disgnose the fault on the pressure plate, mainly if the clutch pedal comes back slowly. As with the pressure plate fingers being flat, i don't see it causing poor pedal return. I think your have more of a hydraulic problem rather than a mechanical
I had already put a new master cylinder in, before i swapped the clutch, hopin that it would fix the problems that i was having. now, it was a used part, but after installing it, it immediately felt better.
I'm not sure what to do at this point. I really don't want to spend over 200 bucks on a new master cylinder, but at the same time i don't wanna spend over 1000 to get a new clutch just to find out it's the same.
anyway, The guy from spec is gunna call me today, and I'll see what i can get out of him.

I had a Spec stage 2 in my 99 2.2 a few years ago with no problems. I think it will be hard for you to get them to pay for labor.
275hp & 306tq - 1999 2.2 ohv
13.2 @ 108 mph
-1996 2.4 liter + Turbo + Built motor + Torco + More boost = Lots o' Power
-2000 Mustang GT + 2004 Cobra motor, Whipple 2.3 supercharger,
built rear-end,Dodge Viper spec T56 6 speed, bolt-ons = wheelies at the track!!!!!
No spec won't pay for labour at all, it states that on the warranty paper they give in the box
Ok the notchy feeling your talking about, mine does the same thing. In other words you push the clutch in 1/3 of the way and its resistant, after that it goes to the floor with less resistance. If thats the case it's normal. It's a stiffer pressure plate causing this. But if your clutch pedal doesn't come back correctly. It's either a clucth pedal linkage problem(spring off or something stupid) or a hydralic problem. Those are the only things i can see to cause the pedal not to return. I mean thats unless you have a leprecon in the bellhousing holding the hydralic bearing from returning. Ne-waz you stated there was a used master installed, remove the master and take out the internals. Check to see if the seals are good and that you don't have any kinda gum build-up in the bore or on the spring.
If nothings leaking, I'm still convinced it's the master cylinder. Don't go replacing it because i said so..but have your mechanic check it over GOOD. I'm not there to see the problem, because of that I can't be 100% sure thats the fault(nor can anyone on this form, we can only relate to things heard or have seen on other cars)...Good Luck!!
that is exactly the way it feels. Where is this spring that you speak of. I've never seen one anywhere in this system......

the spring(well more like a tension coil), it's inside the master cylinder. If you have gum build up in the cylinder, more than likely the seal is leaking back fluid..hense why i said take it apart, but be carefull cause it's pretty much all plastic(minus the tension coil spring and the push rod off the pedal, there of metal)
Thanks. I'll give that a shot
