Will an automatic j-body transmission fit in place of my 5-speed and will everything still fuction properly; like the tach? Me and the wife need something that we can both drive. Thanks for the info peeps.
Also, wrong forum, but since I'm here, does anyone wanna trade. I have a xenon kit right now. Looking for a Big Mouth body kit. The kit is still black. Has not been painted.

Picture link for the body kit:

anything is possible given you have all the pieces. your gonna spend alot of money. we're talking computer, sensors, wiring harness, the trans, mounts, starter, switches, axles. it may be easier to teach someone to drive a stick.

Hello everyone. My name is Nick. I'm a new guy at this site, joined the other week. I am in a similar position with the tranny situation. But I'm the one with the automatic tranny, and i was wondering how much it would cost to drop in a 5-speed. I'm thinking about doing performance work on my 2001 Sunfire which has the 2200 motor. Any info would be appreciated.

It seems like a lot of transmission switch questions are popping up. It's definitely very expensive, and not practical. Either teach her to drive it or you could find a 95-99 used j-body automatic for next to nothing (compared to the cost of changing your current car to auto)

I've thought of the same thing with my auto, but it's just not worth it. keep you tranny and just deal with it. And nick........by the intercepter and you'll be much happier with the auto

You could get the tranny and parts for that amount....paying someone to do it for you will cost you an arm.

I hate to say it, but i'm not the type of guy that knows things about cars. Your going to have to tell me what an intercepter is. I asked someone before and they said something about an old cop car.

After having gone thru this myself... but the other way... going from auto to 5 speed... I can offer the following advice:

1. Cost!!!! It ended up being MUCH more expensive than I first thought. I figured on $1500 given the upgrades I wanted to do. With all the little pieces adding up, it was closer to $2500 when all was said and done. I got LOTS of deals too... but I made sure I didn't cut any corners and that it was all done properly in the end.

2. Time. I'd never done such a swap before, and the people I had helping me didn't live close or have cars. I had to do a lot of running back and forth after work and such to get it done. Took me close to a week to get it running. Welding in the trans mounts was a pain.. and I don't even think anyone makes a weld-in mount for the auto... GM only sells the complete frame rail assembly. Getting parts to go to a 5 speed (from an auto) is somewhat easier..

3. Practicality. It's easier to just sell the damn car, then buy one with the right drivetrain. Wasn't really an option for me... since 5 speed 2000 convertibles are SUPER RARE at least in this area. I've heard they were special-order only... dunno if that's true or not... but I only know of one. Automatics are EVERYWHERE.

Too bad you live way the h311 out in California. I want to do 5spd and have the 2200 auto 4spd. If you were close, a couple engine hoists is all we'd really need haha. Just swap engine/trans/computer/harness.

Another option is to buy a wreck J-Body off of E-Bay (or junkyard) and do the swap from there. I saw an 03 side-wreck go for like $320 or so with Eco Auto. Something like that could get you a stronger motor, and auto.

Good luck

Don't forget, you'd have to cut out the old trans mounts, and weld in new ones. Manuals and automatics use different mounting points.

Yea, I was thinkin' along the lines of cut it out of the donor car, than re-weld it into the other car... Not that we'll be doing it anyway. I'd rather build a 2.4 or something else worthy, and putting a 5/6 spd manual behind the built motor.

Which reminds me, does anyone know of a RWD trans that will bolt up to the 2.4?? Or even Eco? I'd kinda like to do RWD partly for performance and partly the *cool* factor, but I dunno if there are any tranny's that will bolt up. I know there's one for the 2200 out of S10's, but I doubt it'll fit the 2.4/bigger.

Yup.. Quad 4 Rods makes bellhousings for the Quad 4 and 2.4L Twin Cam motors... so you can use them to go RWD.

You're a handy guy to have around haha

Now the site says that the bellhousing is for Quad 4 - are the newer 2.4's the same bolt pattern? Say like an 00/01 2.4L?
