Hey, about a week ago, my manual transmission completely broke on my 1998 z24 5 speed. The car doesn't move in any gears, and just makes grinding and other awful noises when that is attempted... So here are my questions:
- I assume I need a new tranny... Correct me if I'm wrong?
- Out of what cars can I get one to replace mine, or where can I find a used one for a decent price?
I'm trying to find one to replace what I have, because I love my Z, but if I have to buy a new tranny at $2000, there is no way I'm keeping it, I'll buy a new car.

someone please answer this, my brothers 98 Z-24's transmission is about to die.
What are the prices for a used tranny, a remanufactured or rebuilt tranny and Im guessing labour is 1000 for 10hrs work rite.

i just replaced a close friend of mines auto in her 97 z24. The auto ran 250 bucks with 53k on it. That was a junkyard tranny. It took 6 hours for me to do it in my garage. Thats my first fwd replacement. Your best bet is a junkyard... call around in the area. I'm not 100% sure on the differences on your year. obviously a 1998 sunfire gt woudl work. sorry if i didnt help much.... Jason

Your looking close to 600 for a 5 spd. any 96 thru 99 2.4 trans will work. Atleast in my area they are running around that price. If not Higher. With ? for milage.
so basically, any 96-99 2.4 j-body will have the exact same automatic 4 speed tranny.
are these used trannies realiable?

600 sounds high.. but what do i know...u cant really put a auto in ur car. The auto 4 speed trannys are all the same except for the tranny cooler lines. One has a spacer.. and the other doesnt. But either way you car is a manual... which is better anyways

It sounds like it is the spyder gears. I am in process replacing them in my new to me 98 Z. Got the parts out of a Geo Storm 5 speed. Internall parts are swappable between the Storm 5 speed and the cavalier 5 speeds (Isuzu trans).
