i was wondering how damaging is it to shift from 2nd to 3rd then drive, on my 95 2.3 auto, just wondering,
Not really damaging but I wouldn't drive like that all the time. People don't suggest it because it's easier to go from say 3 to N by pushing too hard (I know cause I did it once). Basically, if you're shifting like that for an performance edge, there really is none....take it from someone who has an 4T40E.

I'm sure it's somewhat damaging but not as much if you don't mess with it everyday and miss shift or throw it into the wrong gears and mess stuff up. Last thing you need to do is go from 3 to R LOL

i know i think i am just going to get the bm shift kit thing, that should help,
It's called an "automatic" for a reason
R lock out, the stick cant go past N unless its broke. all you could possibly do is rev out. going D 3 2 1 is extremely bad on this trans and all autos. Im trying to blow my tranny right now so my warranty will fix it and make it have a "standard" "shift kit" so they say. rebuilds do shift harder. my convertible has a rebuild and i love it
how is driving it in manual gears hard on it. if you weren't suppose to they wouldn't let you. its like an engine. if running to redline was bad they wouldn't let you. if thats the only way you drive i'm sure you will screw something up(in both apps), but if its every now and then it won't hurt a thing. in fact if your racing someone leave it in 1st. the pcm boosts line pressure and shifts a spec sooner. it will shift through all the gears no problem and it feels like you put an intercepter on and turned it up. i bracket raced all summer and my tranny shifts perfect. i actually think it shifts better than when i first got it(just normal driving). the only thing that might hurt it by driving in manual gears is if you downshift that way. then the clutchs are slipping a lot more than desgined and wear out faster.
going from 1-2-3 isn't going to damage the tranny. Otherwise why in hell do we have 1-2-3-D on the 4speed.

over 100,000 miles on my 00 , i shift manually 75% of my driving time
i got the car used with 70,000 something miles , and it seams to me to have a problem since i got the car , and so far the trans has had no change from then to now
and ive got the shift plus on it , which i keep on level 2
and my 97 has 83,000 and no problems and i shift it the same percentage of time

If you're using it to hold the gears, then yes it is going to do damage. More heat = shorter life.
We have different positions on the shifter for more torque, lower speed, more power ranges. Like if you're stuck. Or going down a long hill.
If you don't know what they're there for... read your owners' manual. You'll be surprised what it says about some things!
