OK, so I have a 98 2.2 5speed with 65k on it. I replaced the gear box fluid at 40k. All other fluids are new and topped off.
Sometimes I have a hard time shifting into 1st. When this happens it wont let me shift it into first, so I hold it as far as I can without bending anything, then lightly accel and it shifts.
Sometimes it slips a tad when shifting gears and makes a soft "rump" sound when going into gear.
My stick has a half inch of lateral play when in gear.
So, any ideas on whats wrong with my tranny? I figure its just old and could use a rebuild. I see that a bunch of you have gone with a getrag tranny, but is it worth the cost for a daily driver, and knowing that I'll never turbo the car and most likely wont get any more than 15 hp out of inexpensive mods down the line?
I ask because you all say the isuzu tranny is crap, but carparts.com has them for a couple of hundread bucks, and if I were to upgrade it a bit and add a new nice organic clutch, would that be ideal for my car?
Any other great priced websites for clutches and trannies?
Are my only options the stock tranny and a getrag?
Also, sometimes when I run the car kinda hard, I get a rotten egg smell. A buddy said that this is froma clogged cat. I see some high flow ones are $100 or so. But I have it registered in MN and have never done an emissions test...
Thanks for the help guys, I appreciate it.
