Judgin just by looking at them it seems that the radiator style one has more surface area to displace the heat. But I have no actual experience with either. Is this for an auto trans?

By definition, the 40T40E would have 40 forward gears. Heh
When you're looking at a trans cooler, you need to consider how much temperature drop you will want.... it's best if you know what your temperature is right now, with a trans temp gauge.... and how much you want to drop it. Some say "bigger is better" but there is an overkill when it comes to small cars... you don't want a cooler so huge that the transmission is cold all the time.
I've used Hayden, Fluidyne and Everco auxiliary coolers... all worked well. I generally stick with the "heavy duty" models as opposed to the regular or extreme heavy duty versions.
