yes, you can pull the trans w/o the engine..... is it auto or 5 speed? The 5 speed comes out pretty easy..... the auto a bit more work.

both come out the bottom pretty easily after you pull the subframe assembly.

Just go to a local auto parts store and pick up a haynes manual. I just replaced the tranny in my 2000 2.2 and it took about 3 and 1/2 hours to get it out. recommend disconnecting the subframe. I also removed the lower engine mount and held the engine up with a lift. When I installed the new tranny I had the engine at like a 20 degree angle and the tranny bolted up easier at a little bit of an angle.

Disconnect shift cable from transaxle
Disconnect the TV cable
Disconnect vent hose
Unplug all electrical plugs
Have to support the engine I put a jack stand under the oil pan or an engine lift
I removed my brake calipers to keep them out of the way you dont have too
Removed Struts
Removed axles
Remove the starter
Remove the splash shield under the tranny and engine
Remove 3 torque converter bolts
Disconnect ground wires
Disconnect coolant lines
Disconnect subframe
Remove air intake box

I think i got it all. But like I said just follow the steps in the Haynes book.
