well, today as i was cruising around i can put it into 2nd gear but when i give it gas it pops right out but i can go from 3rd to 2nd and let it deccelerate but yet again, gas = pops into neutral. any ideas? i got it going into gm for warranty work but just trying to get an idea on what it is
if i hold it in 2nd and give it gas, it bucks like hell
synchros are more than likely shot.
same happened to me. dealer fixxed it under warranty though.
My car was made with wrenches, Not chopsticks.
Synchros, Mine did the same
anything they can do to make it stronger?
well, dealership called and they are ripping the tranny out...... nothing i can do but sit back and wait to see what the deal is now
whew big relief

It's often due to the shift forks getting bent slightly at the tips, then chewing up the synchro's. I have tried to get some stronger shift forks made up, but the guy bailed on me, so that project has been postponed for now. If you look at the shift forks, they are very thin metal at the ends under the clear plastic tips, and don't hold up too well with hard driving. I'm on my 3rd tranny in 120,000kms, with # 4 on the way, lol.
15.3 @ 89.97mph, 14's on the way?
dropped by the dealership today and saw my tranny ripped right apart with gears and such everywhere, hope to god i get it back and it works....... and the mechanic had my battery tray stacked up on my cf cover for my battery
and all sorts of @!#$ like that, i hope i dont have any issues with anything once i get it back cause i will be pissed
I know this is an older thread, but instead of making a new one.
My 01 is doing the same thing, all the gears are fine except for when I shift into third it sometimes pops back out or grinds a bit.
If it is the synchros, how hard is that to fix/what does it typically cost? Or do I need a whole new transmission?
if its not under warrenty, and if you don't have exp. in building a tranny just buy one from your local salvage yard for about $100, and drop that bad boy in and problem solved.
Displacement= 2.2L
Valve Train= OHV
Bore & Stroke= 3.50 x 3.46
Compression Ratio= 9 to 1
Net HP @ RPM= 125 @ 5200
Maximum Torque Ft Lbs @ RPM= 135 @ 4000
Fuel System= MFI
Normal Oil Pressure: psi @ 3000 RPM= 56
Where do you live? I checked car-part.com for a transmission and they all want 500+ for them...
nashville, go to www.pull-apart.com local salvage yard, problem for you though they dont deliver and you have to pull the trans yourself thats why its so cheap.

I have yet to see a bent fork.... and I've repaired at least 5 Getrags with this issue...... Its the plastic tips that crack and fall off, causing the fork not to move the locking ring enough to engauge the gear. There is a rumor that GM has now replaced the plastic tipped forks with bronze tipped forks, just trying to source a part number for them.

If I decide to get someone to rebuild the transmission, having the part # for those bronze tipped forks would be awesome.
Post it if you find it!
i'm looking into getting the shift forks in a getrag tranny strengthened with cryotreatment.

I was just on that site the other day... The way their pricing works is $75 for 0-22lbs anything over 22 lbs is 3.50/lb.
Been contemplating cryoed gears

Cryotreat plastic? cold plastic = brittle plastic...... dont think thats going to work. The shift forks arnt bending, the plastic sleeves are breaking off
