Hey guys!
I have a 2001 Cavalier, Automatic transmission. Here's my issue.
This only happens sometimes, usually once a week. Yesterday it happened to me twice within 4 kilometers though so I'm getting a little more worried.
Sometimes when I stop then start going again, the tranny won't shift into second gear unless I get it up to about 4500rpm, then it'll SLAM into 2nd and stall the engine. If I put it in Neutral then back into Drive it'll clunk into 1st, and I can move again but still does not switch to 2nd. Reverse will clunk as well, but is usable. If I turn the car off for a few minutes and start it again, I can shift through the gears with no clunk and the car will act normal again. I also noticed that when this does happen, my No T/C light is on.
Also, I'm mention too that if I'm driving and my tranny is in 3rd or 4th and the No T/C light comes on, it'll drive fine until I start slowing down, then the RPM's will go like mad going really low, then up to about 1500, then down to 500, then back up. I'm guessing it's having problems downshifting. Yesterday it did stall when I slowed right down, probably was stuck in 1st.
I'm guessing that there is a sensor screwing up somewhere. If I'm right, where is this sensor, how much does it cost, and what do you think a garage would charge to get it installed.
Low line rise causing a weak upshift, usually noticed on the 1-2 shift. And a delayed reverse engagement. That's a common problem on the 4t65-E (not sure about other tranny's, but i'd guess they're close to the same) This is caused by a worn boost sleeve in the valve body.
yea.. but if it was something mechanical then shouldn't it happen pretty much all the time? and there's no real delay in putting it in reverse, it just clunks. Would that also cause the NO T/C light to come on only when the tranny is acting up?
Have you checked the fluid level?
dipstick is an Option on my car, and evidently, it didn't come with it... grr. but I don't really think it would be the fluid level, maybe I'll clean the oil dip stick real good then dip it in the tranny and see...
all is fine with tranny fluid level and it's a nice pinkish redish color.

Hmmm.... we must be talking about the 4spd then.
meh.. screw it.. i think I'll just drive it till she dies...
I guess you came here and posted, with no intention of really getting help.
So, f*ck your tranny n*gga.
Buy a new one, ya rich mothaf*kka
yea okay... was actually getting ideas on whatelse could be the problem.. which helped... so evidently I did get help.
Oh.. and grow up.

it's people like this that make other people (i.e. myself) not want to come to this place for any help or idea's!
this clown should be banned for the way he's typing and going around the "language filter". if i can remember correctly, thats a term of service violation!

SHOoff was only making an observation.. dont get all pissy everyone... i mean he did give some thought and insight to the problem, and i dont think he was absolutely serious. you, yourself made it sound very clear that you dont seem to care about other peoples insight and your own personal options as to what you can do(yes, just by saying youll drive it till it dies).. so you yourself need to do some growing up and take some responsibility there, dont just say "screw it" because that doesnt make anyone take you seriously, or think your serious about learning what the problem is... and about the language filter, really who cares, you'll get over it...
anyway, on to the matter at hand... basically ask yourself if you like your J enough to keep it... then decide whether you want to keep it or get a new(er) car... no matter what, you need to start saving, if you havent already... if you want to keep your car, itd be easiest to just get a new tranny. if you dont, have fun with your new car... if you go the route of a new tranny, get a manual... i personally, dont trust electronics to do everything for me, because as you can see they all eventually fail... not to say that a manual wont ever die, because they do, but there are typically less problems over time with the manuals(simpler design, less bells and whistles and such)... at least from what i can see. and again, if you still decide to go against advice, have fun killing your, clearly, beloved J... and with your new car and all...
I don't hate this car, I'm just paying 30% interest on payments and I'm getting ripped off and really not in the mood to have to replace anything like a freaking tranny! I personally don't think that there's anything wrong with the transmission though, just a sensor somewhere. I guess I was more or less asking what sensor this could be and what I'd expect to pay for it. "I'm guessing that there is a sensor screwing up somewhere. If I'm right, where is this sensor, how much does it cost, and what do you think a garage would charge to get it installed."
I guess I should have also mentioned that to fix this problem, I pullover, stop and start the engine, usually that'll take care of the No T/C light but it'll still clunk into first, so I stop and start the engine again and it's shifts into drive no problem and I can drive normally again
And I basically replied with "oh.. and grow up" becasue of the last part of his post. Had it just said "I guess you came here and posted, with no intention of really getting help." (leaving out the useless last paragraph) then it would have been fine. I was in a mood when I had posted that line because of the amounts that I'm paying for this car, and I'm just getting generally frusterated with consistantly having to fix things in this car. I should have known it was going to happen though, it was an auto body courtesy car prior
. Anyway I'm sure you can agree that the last part of his post was just completely unnessecary.
And as for buying a new car, well, my credit should be good enough now, I'm actually looking into trading this car in for another Cav. 2002 Z24, fully loaded. My car is a 4 door family car, not really for me. lol. The only problem is that I still owe 9000 on this car, so the difference on the tradein value would be tacked on to whatever new car I get, but the payments will still be smaller due to a MUCH lower interest rate so I'm gonna do it once I get up to date on the payments.
