I've done searches for this problem on here and I just get lost in the hundreds of posts that seem to relate to what I need, but don't seem specific enough.
A friend of mine just bought an '87 Cavalier, 2.0, 3-speed auto, and we both know what the problem is, but I don't know what to tell him to do about it. The TCC will go into lockup just fine, but it won't come out of it when slowing down without a brief visit to neutral. The car will try to stall just like a manual in 4th without pushing in the clutch pedal.
Is this an easy problem to fix, or should he just give up on it and leave the lockup unplugged, wasting lots of precious gas on the highway? (Not that he drives it on the highway much anyway; he keeps this car in town most of the time.)
It sounds like the solinoid valve is hanging up. depending on which model you have, one or more of the two or three switches could be hanging up, or it could be the solinoid itself. These switches are in the valve body. See TranStar Industries web site for a diagram of the parts. Some of the later model 3T40/TH125C transmissions used a different Valve Body Gasket, that had a much larger outlet port opening. Most rebuild and shift improver kits used the newer gasket.
If you don't want to do a teardown of the valve body(not for the novice), go to a reputable transmission shop (no chains such as AAMCO, or Cottman). I've never been told anything but BS at the chain shops. Always have had good service from independant shops.
the wifes 90 z24 has that plug disconnected for years, no problems.
i say just un hook it and see what happens.
Update: He added some AT conditioner to it, and he tells me it hasn't acted out again, knock on wood.
