There's pins that prevent more than 1 shift fork moving at a time. I would imagine that is what your problem is. When I had my Z I had the same problem. If you just want to move it you can pull off the shift tower on the tranny itself. There you can manually put it onto neutral. Put the tower back on and you should be able to move it to where it has to go.

Where are these said pins? the same thing happen to me today. I parked at a friends house, was in there for like 2 hours, and when i came back, I started the car, and put it in reverse, from nuetral, and proceeded to release the clutch, but i went forward not backward. Tried again, same thing.
I pulled off the shifter assembly, and sure enough, it was in a forward gear, but the shift fork, was in the nuetral area. Anyone know what I mean? So, i manually shifted it back to nuetral, re-installed the shifter fork, and it all works, fine, but I'm worried it will happen again. I have no clue how it got into that gear, without the shift fork being in that area.
