Im new to the Forum and i had a few questions. I was looking around but couldn't find what I was looking for. My buddy has a 97 Sunfire GT 2.4 5spd. For some reason he keeps chewing up transmissions. Is there something He can do to fix this? Ive seen that the Isuzu swap is popular. Is this a good route to go? Does it bolt up or do you have to switch the internals over to the Sunfire tranny. Ive heard that the Tranny in the Grand Am is a little stronger as well. is this true? all help is apreciated
bump common guys help me out here
Uhm..... how often does he chew up trannys? The only way I can see the trans chewing itself up in more than one instance over the life of the car (and i'm talking a couple hundred thousand miles) is if he's been doing a lot of roll backs and burnouts and crap like that. That's gonna destroy any transmission. Only other way is if he's pushing a lot more power than stock.
The Izuzu swap is using the gear sets from an Isuzu trans, in the J-body case. The Grand Am tranny is only stronger if we're talking automatics. And comparing the V6 tranny to the 4cyl tranny. The 2.4 5spd tranny from the GA, is the exact same thing. So no.
great thx for the info SHOoff
I would like to add. that when he puts the tranny in gear and brings the clutch out, the tranny makes a broken glass sound when its in gear. the sound gets louder as you go through the gears being the loudest in 5th, and the most quiet in reverse. could the diff be the cause?
