I have heard that people can swap in a new transmission without dropping the subframe. I'd like to know how the f^%$ did they do that? I have taken off the little bar thing but in no way will a standard isuzu trans fit onto the engine between the front mount and the subframe. No F'in way.
If you have swapped a trans in (with the engine in) without dropping the subframe how in sam F*&^ did you do it?
Sven you totally quarterloafed your computer..
It can be done. Remove "the little bar thing" and also remove the shifter mechanism on the top of the tranny. It's held in by 4 bolts.
It doesn't exactly fall out for ya but if you piss around with it enough it'll come out. I've done it several times this way.

Yah it can be done underneith without dropping the subframe, but i've found it takes me less time if i just drop the whole sub frame to remove it. Weither your at home on stands or you use a lift, the sub-frame is really easy to remove. When removing the sub frame you can get the trans in and out within 3hrs on stands at home.
he has a good point...ive done it without removing it too..but its a pita...just drop and make it easy on yourself
I have done it twice so far. First time with a buddy and the second time by myself. Just make sure you take all the external stuff off ( shift gate, mounts, cable mounts, etc ) There is not enough room to stick it in there the way it is mounted. Last time I slipped the tranny away from the block about an inch, then rotated the tranny clockwise 90 degrees ( differential down ) Pulled the tranny away from block, and dropped the tranny straight down

well my front mount came on the car and in no way has it wanted to come off.. I've hammered to my hearts content and the bolt won't come out. which is odd since it can spin independant of the mount. so that being said I have the get the trans on with the front mount attached to the body. its a PITA but its almost on. doing this all by myself sucks..

It's easier with a getrag, as it's a bit more compact.
