got my tranny apart, need help with possible problem. Pics

I finally got the tranny apart on my 97 z24. It's a 5 spd tranny. I bought it with a shot tranny with intentions of fixing it or replacing it. The guy that I bought it from said he went to drive it one morning and he heard a pop and from then on when you put it into gear it doesnt drive but there is a slight grinding. So once I got it apart, I noticed 2 things, #1 there is a bearing shot, and t#2 there is a pirce that looks like it wasnt int he right place, and it has a big of grinding on it. If someone could tell me what that price is used for, and maybe a solution to fixing this thing. Thanks

I can't see the bearing well in the first pic, are you sure it's the bearing and not a shim??
The second pic is ok, the unknown piece is the reverse idler gear..when reverse is seleted, the idler gear is moved into contact with the reverse gear thus giving you reverse output.
btw i have a couple parts from the same trans in my garage..think i even have both complete shafts. thats if your interested.

What exactly is a shim? Would that recerse idler gear have anything to do with the whole tranny not working? could it prevent it from going into gear? As for the parts in your garage, do you want to sell or donate them? what would you want for them?

I have been playing around with the tranny trying to figure out what is wrong. I think you were right with the bearing still being good. Should it be able to shift when the cover of the tranny is off? it seems like it doesnt want to shift at all. none of the three selectors. I won't want to put it back together till I have figured out what is wrong with it. Does anyone have some pictures of this tranny that I could look at, or even a schematic or drawing.

Check your diff. In the first pic, it is the assembly with all of the bolts around it, all the way to the left. Take it apart, probably your spiders are gone. The reverse idler does look like it is in the wrong place when it is in the case, because it kinda just sits down low, not engaging any other gears until you throw it into reverse. It is difficult to get into reverse on a bench. The reverse gear might be ground up because of debris from your stripped spiders. There are a bunch of little detent pins in the shafts that have to be lined up in order for any of the shafts to move. Can't tell in the pic, did you remove the plate at the bottom of the shafts? If you don't have to, don't, because then you get litle pins all over the place unless you are very careful. Check out alldatadiy.com; $25 for a year subscription and you get access to all of the service diagrams, etc.

today I was playing around on it. I took one of those shafts out, not the shaft with gears, but the one with the gear selector. there is a little pin int he bottom. I lost it. I figured it fell down in the diff so I wiggled the diff out, and I got the pin, plus I did realize the the spider gears are ground out bad. So I will prob get some new ones. any suggestions on where to get them? Also, that shaft that I took out, how do I go about getting it back in. do I just line it up and hammer it in? It is the taller shaft that has a notch on the top. It also engages the reverse idler gear

NO HAMMERS in the transmission. If the pins are in the right places, it will slide right in.

I got them in, but they feel a bit sloppy in there. there not tight like the other ones. Should it be so that only one shaft can move on that metal piece at a time? It;s really hard to shift it into reverse and 5th.

What's sloppy, the spiders? There should be no slop. You probably forgot the shims; there is a spoon shaped shim under each spider. They tend to stick to the back of the spider. You need to pop it off the stocker and put it in with the replacement.

I misunderstood you about the shafts- There are pins that you have to hammer in and out, i.e. the dowels that hold the shift fork on, etc. However, do not hammer on the shafts themselves. If one is not moving, it is because of the detent pins. Yes, only one should move at a time, that's what the pins are for. They prevent you from shifting into two gears at the same time, say if you break a shift cable or something.

Mine was very difficult to shift into reverse when I first assembled it. Note that the pins under the bottom plate that pass through the shafts are not all the same length. One is 1mm shorter. This one has to go in the shaft that has the hole at an angle. This is very important, and may be your problem with shifting into reverse.

I was actually reluctant to put my tranny back in, because reverse was still giving me a hard time on the bench. However, once I got the tranny in, filled it with fluid, and had the added leverage of the shifter, it shifts perfect.

if you need a trans for parts...I have a trans that has no 3rd gear syncro but my differential is fine, I could sell it to ya pretty cheap if you want to piece together a good tranny...although I'm no expert to help ya here...just thought I'd offer ya a cheap solution
