Spider gears?

Well, my brother has his 98 Z24 into the transmission shop. The tranny is pretty much toast, the shop figures probably around 2000 bucks to rebuild it. They have a used 5 speed Z24 transmission there for 300 but this one isn't much good either. The mechanic suggested taking whatever good parrts are left from both transmissions and putting them together, then ordering a new set of spider gears and a clutch system. Where do you get a set of spider gears anyway? This transmission job is starting to get expensive, he's already looking at 1000 bucks and by the sound of it, it's gonna get even more expensive. He only paid 2000 bucks for the car back in March. Man, I tried to tell him not to buy the damn thing but he wouldn't hear it. Now he's using my Sunfire, I've hardly driven my own car since August. @!#$ @!#$ @!#$...looks like I'll be without my car for another month or 2.

only place is GM, and they are expensive.......

Best bet is Car-Parts.com......... and find a low milage trans........ even swapping to the NVG or Getrag would be well worth it (since he needs a clutch anyway)

$2k isnt that bad of a price for a '98 Z, even with a bad trans......

It took my local shop 5 weeks to come up with replacement spider gears for my '99 Z. GM doesn't sell spider gears, they only sell complete differentials which I was told was $700 or something like that. I got my spider gears and clutch replaced for $750 total. Shouldn't cost you more than $1000-1500 unless they are replacing all wear items within the tranny. Otherwise take the previous advice and go get a junkyard tranny or do a swap.

5 speed trannys for the Z24 are near impossible to find here in New Brunswick, I checked Ontario on car-part.com and the used transmissions go from 1500 to 900 bucks, plus shipping from there to here. Now, what's this about a swap?

I have the part numbers for the spider gears, and thrust bearings behind them, some where...... tracked them down for both the getrag and isuzu........ larger gears where about $100 each, the smaller ones $200 each....... I believe those where the Getrag prices........ will have to look for my quote print out.

As for the swaps, search this forum for the info.

You can use spider gears out of a Geo storm manual trans. They are made of a better metal. That is what I did to get my Vert moving.

Stock Chevy/Isuzu Spiders are JUNK. Like zsquee24 said, go with the SOHC geo storm tranny. Take it apart, grab the spiders, and give them to your tranny shop.
The Chevy/Isuzu spiders are pressed metal. Very soft. If you buy a rebuilt or a dealer diff, it is just going to do it again, and cost you an a$$load of money. The Geo/Isuzu tranny has hardened, machined steel spiders. They drop right into your diff.
I got an SOHC Storm tranny at a local yard for $100, only 65K on it. Tore it apart, swapped the spiders into my 99Z 5-speed myself, saved about 2 grand. AND, I now have the piece of mind of a more durable set of spiders in there.

...BTW, car only had 87K on it when my spiders stripped out...and I drive like a granny...

if any1 is interested, i have a diff already put together with the machined geo storm spiders in it as well as a brand new pg lsd already installed. asking 300 for it.

I even had to swap the ring and pinion. The original pinion had a couple teeth missing chunks. Swapped out of the Geo storm trans. So now I have a final drive ratio of 3.83 instead of 3.94. I don't notice any real difference other than it cruises at a little lower rpm on the highway.
