First off my car is a 5 spd 93 z24 and the problem is that the shifter just flops front to back, no gears, no side to side. I got home from work today and moved the car up to get my bike behind it, backed up, shut the car off and tried to put it in 1st and #$%^. I imagine this also means I'm stuck in reverse. Didn't think to check to see if the car still rolls turned off though. I was too pissed at that point.
Am I correct that its the shifter cables? The car has had no trouble shifting in the last little while. Do they break or just become unhooked?
And now the other problems. First my car is 4 floors up in the parking garage and probably stuck in reverse. Not to mention the passanger side is against the wall with no way of jacking the right side up. Not to mention only 3 weeks after my car was broken into and I just finished putting in a new deck, window and replacing my tools, therefore I have no money and need to fix this myself.
If the problem is shifter cables is it an easy job. Something I can do by myself the first time with alittle mechanical ability? is there a way to do it without jacking the car up?
Thanks.
I did mine myself and din't have to jack the car up. Although it might help if you can get under the car. The whole process took a couple of hours for me to do but Part of that was removing the old broken cables. You will also have to remove your centre console as well. The point of entry for the cables is on the passenger side of the car but you shouldn't need to have the passenger door open to do the work. Also you can manually move the mechanism on the top of the tranny if you need to move the car or at least get it out of reverse if it's stuck in gear.
hope this helps

I changed mine myself too its easy and to move it just use the part where the cable go to on the top of the transmission i drove mine from fort worth to irving in 2nd gear it wasnt very fun cuz i had to go like 25 mph but itll get it there when you change the gears on the transmission itself it should pop the shifter into whatever gear its in at least it did on mine.
