I have a none B&M short shifter that I bought 4 years ago. (some place in NY)
I found out that the factory bracket broke 6 months ago which made my shifter loose, however all gears worked fine until I went to the junkyard to replace the shifter bracket and placed my customer made short shifter back on it.
After I fixed it shifted great with no play accept that when I down shifted to second gear it would not always grab 2nd gear.
When it does it will pop out of 2nd gear some times.
I know it's not a tranny problem because it happened after I fixed the braket.
Any suggestions.
Could it be the shifter cables ?
I don't know how to tighten them.
Any instructutions?

The left side cable is out of adjustment. Can you grab all the other gears just fine, especially 5th and reverse?
Let me change what I just said. the left cable is PROBABLY out of adjustment......Again, can you grab 5th and reverse just fine? Or are they a tad hard to shift into? What about 4th and reverse? If 5th and reverse are a bit tough to grab, its the left cable, if 4th and reverse are hard to grab, then its more likely the right cable.
Thanks for the quick reply Greg.
5th and reverse are working great !
Funny thing is after I fixed the bracket all the gears shifted much better accept second.
I also have no problem with fourth gear.

How do I adjust the right shifter cable ?

Hmm, weird, you say 4th, 5th, AND reverse work no problem right? Well, to adjust is sort of a pain, you have to loosen the clamp thingy that grips the end of the cable, and move the cable back or forth a couple notches. No more than a couple at a time though, and its a good idea to leave the console off so you can adjust it till its right. Before you DO adjust it, mark where the clamp thing is by using a sharpie on the end of the cable up against where the clamp thingy is, that way you can have a point of reference. I honestly don't remember how to loosen the clamp thingy, but its not too hard.

That MAY help, but I dunno. Its the install instructions for that shifter.
It's not a B&M.
Still not sure how to ajust the cables.
Any more tips or pictures?

A 97 eh? you have an isuzu tranny and not the getrag which Greg is talking about...the shifter cables on the getrag can be adjusted but I dont think the isuzu cables can IIRC. I think your out of luck with shifter cable adjustments.
Also, on a getrag tranny the shifter cables are adjustable regardless of the type of short shifter used.

Yes a 97 you can not adjust the shifter cable. I know I owned one. I think your problem is a bad cable. I also had that happen. I now have a 2001 Z with a getrag and you can adjust the cables.
