Isuzu trans in 95 Sunfire GT-acting strangely
Monday, January 22, 2007 11:57 AM
Hello All,

I've got a 95 Sunfire GT with Isuzu 5 speed. I may have two different problems, but I wanted to put this out there.

I bought the car last summer from a kid who said he replaced the clutch, among other things. Problem is, the clutch goes all of the way down to the floor before it disengages, at least most of the time. Plus, I can't always shift into 1st from a dead stop or downshift from 4th to 3rd or 3rd to 2nd with out having to force the shifter into the gate.

I'm thinking the clutch is *&%$!, or maybe air in the slave cylinder line? The car has 134,000 miles on it, I'm thinking maybe I need new cables?

Any ideas? TIA

try bleeding the line, make sure your clutch reservoir is full, check your synchromesh...

Thanks to Rich for replying.

Update:

I guess I need to keep better track of where the floor mat is positioned,
I pulled it down out of the way and am getting cleaner shifts.

But, I still have trouble downshifting, and getting into first.
Plus, even tho the floor mat is out of the way, I still don't have
much take-up room on the clutch...

How do you check synchros without removing the tranny?

How can you isolate the shifter cables as a way to determine whether or
not they need replaced?

when downshifting try to tap the gas a little right before you down shift. also if you slow way down (MPH) before down shifting does it make it easyier.

you dont. synchromesh is your tranny fluid.

Thanks guys.

I already double clutch (leftover from my old Chevy C10 days), but I really shouldn't have to...

Last I checked, the trans is full. No leaks from the trans, btw.

i have the same problem ..trying to get it into first from a stop..let me guess..its easier if you put it in second and throw it up? i still havnt quite figured it out but i think it has air in it that i just cant get out
if all else fails since you have a 95 speed if you cant get it fixed it would make a good excuse to trade it for a 93-94 getrag

ya, it's a b*tch to figure out some of these little troubles...

But it's acting much better since I added some oil to the reservoir and moved the d*mned floor mat out of the way...

Yes, a Getrag sounds nice, but I think my next move is a short throw shifter...
