In my opinion 3spd is a stronger tranny, Then the 4 spd. I had a 3 spd auto in my 88 cavalier, Tranny was a pretty good runner, I had the car for 3 yrs after the new tranny installed, Never had a problem. Ive got 01 cavalier with 4 spd auto 2.2L, Its been pretty good as well.

i've done this swap on my 2000 cav. you'll need transmission, pcm & engine harness, 4 speed mount, 4-speed axles (3 speeds have 2 different lengths axles, but the shorter one will work in the 4 speed. so if you use it, you'll only need one more axle), and you need the shifter linkage that goes from the tranny to the shifter. you don't have to swap consoles, or the actual shifter. also you may want to pick up another cluster (one with P-R-N-D-3-2-1) since you have a 98. and if you don't have a tach, you could get a cluster that has a tach as a bonus.

nope. this swap is 10 times easier than the manual
your better off starting here. or buying a car with the options you want.
