I checked All data to see shat kind of trans fluid goes in the the getrag 5-speed for an 04 cav and it says "Dexron III Transmission Fluid" can anyone verify this? Does the manual trans really take automatic trans fluid??? and only 1.8 qts? Oh yeah and all data just shows a picture (not even a real picture, a drawing) of a bolt above a label as the filler hole and nothign for the drain.... I'm assuming there is a a drain in the bottom of the diff and the filler plug is on the front (radiator) side somewhere?
I need to know ASAP cause I was planing on staying late after work today and doing my version of a 25,000 mile maintenance - oil change, tire rotation, plugs, trans fluid, fuel filter, air filter (clean the K&N) and compression test. Plus a full inspection check eveything over (I would clean and adjust rear brakes and do a brake flush but rear disk brake swap is coming soon so I wont waste my time)
but anyways.... back on topic, trans fluid, how much and what kind?? Synthetic is prefered, I use i whenever I can, hell I do synthetic oil changes every 2,000 miles hahahah

Yes it takes ATF. You need a little over a quart to do a change. So get 2 quarts.

There is a TSB for the fluid change/fill. Put the full 2 quarts of ATF in and be good to go.

Interesting. Is there any more info on this? As to why, and what problems they were having?

the fist one said to put the Saturn fluid in, but the new one says not to do that, i spoke to a tec at work and the new TSB says to but some thrust washer in it to stop the gear rattle...
any way i have dextron IV in mine with no gear rattle, with my old tranny (thanks john) i used B&M trick shift and it got rid of gear rattle also.

I put is Mobil 1 full syntetic Dexron/Mercon, shifts so smooth. Also I was impressed at teh fluid that came out, looks brand new, perfectly clean not dirty or miscolored at all, no signs of any metal shavings. you could have drained it into a bottle as sold it as new and noone would know the difference.
