I'm working toward a built in the engine department and was just wondering if the auto tranny in my 2000 z24 will stand up to 250 hp or not (the tranny has 84,000 miles on it). If no, what do i need to buy while i have the engine out i can go ahead and replace the parts for the trans.

a tranny cooler would help
Im a Xbox 360 fanboy...and damn proud of it!!
Skilz and Acer are well over 250 at the wheels. I would venture a guess and say you will be fine with the 4t40e internals...But you should consider a torque converter, trans cooler and LSD at those power levels.

Thanx guys, just wanted to make sure first. I like to explore my options and do my homework pre-purchase.

huh? if im not mistaken the 4t40e in our cars already has a tranny cooler... well i know theres lines that go into the radiator-i thought THAT served as a tranny cooler as well as a radiator... what gives?
UFlip06 said it best: Just look underneath the engine and if you see big hairy balls it's a 2.4 Twin Cam, if they're shaved it's an Ecotec and if you see nothing it's a 2200!
Yes there is a tiny stock cooler, but an after market one doesn't hurt.

also its torque your worried about. the torque is what kills transmissions

Torque is the #1 destroyer of transmissions, but heat is an enemy of Auto transmissions as well. Manuals making less than about 500 hp (I think) typically don't have to worry about oil cooling methods whereas the autos transfer a large amount of heat to the oil.

When building an Auto, I have always been taught this, think about the clutches, pump, and converter.
Its been a (LONG) bit sense I last did anything to a auto, but having a fresh build, better clutches, valve body, cheek balls, (or a shift kit), with a cooler will help prolong its life............
But that was a long time ago,
If I where you, I would consult any one that has ever built a TH300-TH700R4, or any of the 4Lxx or 4Txx trannys.
Look on the GTP forums too.
Good luck,

you should have to worry about your engine before the tranny... as long as you change your oil, keep it cool, and increase the shift pressures so things dont grind when shifting, then you should be ok
my tranny mods: trans cooler, trans temp gauge, hptuners to increase the shift pressure, and synthetic trans oil
::yea, there is a stock tranny cooler, but im sure it was designed to cool everything that the stock motor can throw at it... when you double your HP & Torque, then things need to be upgraded.
