flywheels all you need to know

The flywheel has four main purposes.
1. crank the engine through the help of a starter motor.
2. connects engine's crank to the trans.
3. stores kinetic energy untill the next power stroke.
4. absorb vibrations from the engine.
The flywheel, an important part of the engine, is also the main driving member of the clutch.it is normally made of nodular or grey cast iron. Welded to or pressed onto the outside diameter of the flywheel is the starter ring gear (what the starter splines to). The large diameter of the flywheel allows for an exellent gear ratio of the starter drive to ring gear, which provides for ample engine rotation during start up.The rear surface of the flywheel is a friction surface machined very flat to ensure smooth clutch engagement. The flywheel also provides some absoption of torsional vibration of the crankshaft. It further provides the enertia to rotate the crankshaft through the four strokes.

The flywheel has two sets of bolt holes drilled into it. The inner set is used to fasten the flywheel to the crankshaft, and the outer set provides a mounting plate for the pressure plate assembly. A bore in the center of the flywheel and crankshaft holds the pilot bushing or bearing, which supports the front end of the transmissions input shaft and maintains alignment with the engine's crankshaft. Sometimes a ball bearing or roller needle bearing is used instead of a pilot bushing.

Dual-mass flywheels are often used to reduce vibrations transmitted through the transmission, which gives smoother shifting, and reduces gear noise. The flywheel consists of two rotating plates connected by a spring and damper system. The forward portion of the flywheel is bolted to the end of the crankshaft and smooths out the crankshafts oscillations. The pressure plate of the clutch is bolted to the rearward portion of the flywheel. Engine torque moves from the front plate through the spring and damper assembly to the rear plate before it enters the transmission. Some have a torque-limiting feature that prevents damage to the transmission during peak torque loads. The rotation of the two flywheel plates can differ by as much as 360 degrees. This allows the front plate to absorb torque spikes and not pass them along to the transmission.

i did read the whole thing. i was merely stating the fact that our cars are some of those which do not have pilot bushings.

My car may run 18s, but I can do your taxes in 10 seconds flat.
JBO lube - they would never have enough in stock and we'd never see RodimusPrime again

Clearly your paper is plagiarized then.
