Isuzu Manual Transmission Noise (98 SF GT)

Hi guys,

In the last couple of months I started noticing a sound coming from the front driver's side of my car. It's hard to explain the sound but think of a playing card in the spokes of a bicycle. Now the trick to it is that when I have my accelerator depressed even a tiny bit, you cannot hear this sound at all. As soon as I let go of the gas and let it coast you hear that "rattling/chattering" sound (it happens in every gear and seems to be speed dependent). If I take it out of gear and just coast in neutral, I still hear the sound, but it isn't as pronounced.

I took it into a GM dealership today for a quick drive around the block and inspection and based on their quick findings, they feel it is coming from inside the transmission (they put it on a hoist and used a stethoscope). Of course, my friendly GM dealership wants to charge me upwards of $1500 to rebuild the transmission when they don't have a friggin clue of what the problem might be.

As far as I can tell, it isn't affecting my shifting, accelerating or anything other than the audible sound.

I was close to trading in my '98 SF GT on a 2007 Cobalt SS Supercharged, but now the dealership won't accept it on trade in because of this "major" issue.

To make a long story a little shorter, any thoughts on what is causing this issue???

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I've been doing some research on hear for similar issues and I've read a little bit about the throwout bearings causing a similar sound (card in the spokes sound). Could this be the throwout bearing causing this noise?

I was told it could be a bad input bearing. if the sound you are describing is the same as what I hear in my car.

Hi guys,

Yep, checked the axles and they all look perfect. When the mechanics put a scope to it, they could specifically hear the sound in the tranny.

The input bearing is a possibility, but did you hear it on deceleration?

Thanks for the input.

yea I heard a noise on deceleration. It was really noticeable if I let off in mid to high rpm. I don't know if its my spider gears b/c I have a getrag, and not as many people have problems with them in my trans. It could be though, I did a few burn outs before I learned how bad that is for our cars.

Should I have to tell the tech to look at the TOB or is it something they should look at in a general transmission check? He did hear the noise himself so I am guessing if he thought it was that he would check it.

I just talked to the guy, the trans is off the car and they will be tearing into it after lunch. I will post what he tells me this evening.
