ok every time I search this all I get is hp handling which is an inncorrect comparison because transmissions handle torque not horsepower.
My queston is how much torque can the getrag F23 handle?
It beats a Honda!
some where in the means of 300 i would assume but not too sure on that though

I think it must be a little higher than 300 because the stock clutch has been proven reliable to 350hp, once again clutches don't handle hp they hold torque but that's what I read in another post & I know a guy who was dynoed @ 310hp to the wheels on a completely stock Cavi with no problems. I can't get him to answer the phone to tell me what his torque rating was. In our cars the peak torque 9 times outta 10 is gonna be higher than peak horsepower. So I'm guessing he was running 315-320 ft/lbs but I'm not sure either that's why I'm asking, lol.

idk about that either but my trans is now just starting to snap synchros in my 2nd-5th gear and im running a fully built eco with a gt35 at 15psi.so im not entirley sure what he handling capabilities are but the must be around the 300wtq area at least

i feel you do need to consider HP as well. the torque rating is very important, but if you have 300 TQ and 600HP, is all you have to worry about is torque? there is still a lot of force with 600HP too.
He who dies with the most toys wins!
Torq455 I agree with you in an application that has 600/300 you would probably wanna consider that but we don't drive Honda's & It is hard for me to believe that there's a GM Compact that would have that much of an unproportional power to torque ratio, especially one that wasn't an all out balls to the walls race vehicle.
Also Matt what kinda Turbo setup you running kit or custom?
It beats a Honda!
ha well its started as a hahn stge 2 and progressed to a bigger turbo(gt35-garret) and basically fully build eco, , any other questions lmk

Kool I'm lookN @ Hahn Stage 2 myself but I'm afraid because my ECO has about 90,000 miles on it, I bought it about a year ago with 67,xxx miles on it . I'm going to go buy another car on Fri so it won't be a daily driver anymore. Would you recommend turboing the stock motor with that many miles on it? Oh yeah I wanna boost to 10lbs?
& last question before somebody tells me I need to move this to the boost forum. How did you incorporate a wastegate in the mix w/the GT35 seeing as the Hahn manifold has no wastegate flange?
It beats a Honda!
buy the exhaust flange and had someone make me a manifold with a external wastegate

is there somewhere that sells a strong tranny or can you buy parts somewheret o buld one???
later,james
Best shot is to just have your existing trans chrynotreated unless you have the money to have a completly custom setup.

Hope this helps , right from gm powertrain. This covers the 2004 model F23

I found that too but I don't understand it so is it sayN that the trans can only handle 170 ft-lb of torque cuz I'm making more than that now?
It beats a Honda!
I see what you mean. i would guess that is the maximum torque that the transmission can handle reliably with minimal wear on components. Perhaps the trans itself can handle 250 Ft-lbs of torque but it may not last as long. Gm could probably awnser your question but talking to them is like talking to a brick wall.
I don't know about that, there is someone on this forum with a turboed Grand Am that has a f23 5 spd who put down 432 whp 417wtq, I can't remember his name but if you look in the boost forum he posted his dyno numbers under the thread "ld9 turbo" or something like that.
Also how much stronger would the trans be with stage 5 axles and a quaife lsd, would they make any difference of just expose the next weakest link like maybe the gears or the main, counter or input shafts? And does anyone make stronger parts for these transmissions?
2000 Z24 5spd header & catback for now.
No there are no stronger parts I have talked with both GM & IPT about this issue, I wish I would have asked GM about the torque question while I had the Rep. on the line, and ONCE AGAIM THE ONLY WAY TO STRENGTHEN THIS TRANSMISSION IS TO HAVE IT CRYNOTREATED.
Also the axles are not part of the trans persay they are part of the drivetrain that connects the transmission to the wheels.
It beats a Honda!
Yeah. You can turbo a car with 90,000 on it. But heres the thing. The internals can only stand up to 5psi without reinforcement.
