Axles... spline count?

Having trouble finding the right axle shafts for my L67 swap. The Park Ave axles I got with the drivetrain have 34 spline axle shafts... really large tripods too! I grabbed a pair of 99 Malibu axles, but once I pulled them apart I discovered they're 32 spline axles.

Which is better? 32 or 34? The axle diameter is the same on both. It's slightly larger than the Cavalier axles were. I don't have a set of Cavalier axles to count

I need something that will spline together, yet be short enough to work (or shorter than the Park Ave axles... which don't have enough spline on them to shorten safely 3.5" each...)

Argh.... fun fun fun!

Why dont you just shorten the cv's in the middle. Thats the way I've always done it, 0.001" press fit with a 0.125" wall 1020 steel tubing pressed over the shaft and cut in a fish mouth coping to increase the welding area and go for it with a TIG welder. BAM!

I don't have that ability... and I highly doubt I'll be able to convice a reputable shop to do it that way....

Yeah, shops sure as hell wont touch it at all, but they would rather shorten up splines?!? WOW.....eh i guess you could convice them to do that alot easier.

im going to have a similar problem and my solution was to just shorten the axle, then get it re-splined by the machine shop.

look on fiero.nl, joeseph upsulon did something similar with his 6 speed swap. he ended up making a short stubby adapter shaft that plugs into the tranny, then the female cv axle plugs into there.

im sure you could get the axles shortened and resplined.

Shortened and resplined is what I'm doing. I've got a L67 w/ 4T65E-HD as well. I'm keeping the N hub, so I'll have the stop machine down the axle to fit the N outer CV if that's possible.

You are going to have to rebuild the outer CV joints so you can use the axles that came with the 4T65 for the tranny side of things and your stockers for the wheel hub.

Won't work... nothing on my application is stock anymore

I've got the 4T65E-HD from the Park Ave.. the axles.. the hubs.. the brakes.. on N-body knuckles and control arms. So it's going to have to be shortened axles for me... unless Fiero ones would fit and are 34 spline?

Well I am pretty sure that the fiero axles have the same spline count as the cavaliers.

I have 99 Grand Am aluminum a-arms - shortened 1/2" and 99 Malibu spindles & hubs, would the 99 Malibu axles be the correct length and trans spline count to fit in a 2000 Z25 with getrag 5 spd?

2000 Z24 5spd header & catback for now.

higher spline count is stronger
