I didn't even realize there was a transmission forum. Oops. Maybe now that I'm in the right place I'll get some answers? Here's the rundown...
I have a 97 2.2l(5 speed) Pontiac Sunfire. Early this morning I was following a friend of mine and went to shift from 3rd to 4th and I had a hard time getting out of third. From there, I couldn't get into ANY gear at all. I've got quite a few friends that are mechanics or have been around cars their whoooole lives and most of them think it's a bent shift fork. Does anyone have any experiance in the matter or any extra tranny's lyin around. Keep in mind, I didn't have /any/ nasty grinding, bumpin, dragging or otherwise scarey noises.
And, since I'm not sure if I'm gonna have to pull the tranny, if I do, I'd like to do a 2.4 swap. In that case, I wanted to know what kind of list of parts I need to complete it. All I know of is the 2.4 l engine, wiring harness and tranny. Or should I even bother doing a swap? 123,800 on the car. Let me know what you guys think, I'd REALLY love to hear some suggjestions. Because for now, I'm out of a vehicle. (Fooked.)
Thanks Much!
I'm thinking it is your shift cables. This is a common issue on the 5 speed cars. Go to the engine bay disconnect the shift cables from the tranny , and then try to shift the tranny by moving the levers. If it works then it is your cables.

No dice, I took apart the shift assembly and my up and down cable doesn't pull at all. The side to side is stiffer than it used to be, but it still moves.

Did you try to move the shifter in the engine bay by hand??

So, yeah...... This car is now in my garage, on jackstands.
I've been labeling a bunch of stuff, started disconnecting some stuff, got the starter and DS wheel off, and that's as far as i'm gonna get until i get home form work later tonight.....
With both cables disconnected form the trans, the shifter move freely, and you cant make it go into gear by moving the levers on the tranny, so, something's FUBAR'd..... We went and picked up a 7x,xxx mile tranny for like 270 or something that's going in...
Any tips on dropping this thing? 2.2/5 speed. i'm not overly worried about it, but i'm a 2nd gen guy, and the subframe/cradle on this thing looks like it might kinda get in the way of dropping the damn thing... tips?
When i'm done with this, i'm gonna look back, and wether or not i get a 3rd gen as a DD will probly depend on how hard this job is, b/c i wont buy an auto

If you can move the gears with the cables off then it sounds like the cables are the issue. You do not have to remove the starter to take the tranny out.

He said you /can't/ make it go into gear by moving the levers. I had a prof mechanic have a look and he deemed it a bent shift fork problem. So I decided it'd be easiest just to replace the whole deal, with RedBird's help of course.
you may not *have* to take it off, but being as easy as it is, i just did it. gives me a little more room to work with. this is almost a luxury job after doing the clutch on my 3.1..........talk about cramped. I undid most of the starter stuff from above for this car LOL
but yeah. the *shifter*(in the car) moves ok with them disconnected, so the cables are ok. The levers on the tranny will *not* go into gear, and i pushed pretty damn hard..... so, out she comes. the clutch and slave have like 20K(i think?) on them so it's not the slave failing to disengage the clutch. plus it does it when the car's off, and we all know that even if you have a screwed slave it should go into gear with the motor off.

Damn right, clutch bled, leaked and rebled, apparently. But besides that haliluyah for driving my own vehicle! Kudos man, thanks again for the help
Yeah, it's all good, no big deal......
My motor swap is gonna be tons more fun tho
You think balancing a tranny while putting it on the motor was fun, you wait til you got a 400lb chunk of metal swinging around on a chain trying to bite off your whole hand, not just your thumb
as soon as the cam gets here. oooohh yeah..... then, torque it all together and OUT comes the 3.1 *evil smile*
