I'm having problems with my shifter in my 00 Sunfire SE. It seems to be sticking, and it's very hard to get into first unless I pull it back into second gear first. It also seems to stick to one side when I pull it out of first or second the shifter will stay to that side instead of going back to center. The same goes with the other side (reverse and 5th). I looked at it and it seems like when I move the shifter the "ball" is moving up and down a little on the right side(where 5th and reverse is). Would a short throw shifter correct this?
im having the same sort of issues, hopfully its shifter related and not shift fork....
I'm having that problem as well, except I already have a short throw shifter, so to go out on a limb i'll say a short shifter wont fix that problem.. I'm thinking it's to do with the shift cables because i hadn't had the problem until i installed the short throw and i hadn't gotten the cables back to thier exact original position.

I would also say that short throw wont fix the problem i got one and have the same problem. I replaced the cables and it still does it, i hear about this problem alot but seems nobody has found any kind of solution...
i know this thread is old but has anyone found a solution to this problem, mine does it now after i instaled the b&m shifter...
What condition are your O-rings in? These like to wear out or so I have read.
its new the shifter has been like it since the day i put it in... mine is sometimes hard to get in first unless i go to second first.. also the right side seems to lift, i think maybe the plastic retainer is wore??? i think im gonna make and aluminum insert and put it in under the retainer to see if that helps.. anyone else have this problem?
if its hard to get in id venture to guess its the shift cables//
