The scyncro on 3rd gear on my getrag F23 isnt working. A tranny mechanic said that they can "pop out" if you shift too hard.
Whitch is what happened in the snow last winter...
So insted of paying over $600 in labour plus the repair and parts fees, I dropped the tranny myself and decided to open it up to have a look.
But I cant split the bell housing from the main case because the output couplings are in the way and I dont want to force anything.
Does anyone cnow how I can fix this problem? (without taking it to a shop)
Or is there drawings or a manual out there for the F23?
PS: I work at a helicopter trans shop for the seaking helicopter, so it shouldnt be much different.
Never heard of syncro's popping out. NOt sure of your problems. You might have a bent shift fork. I have been inside the getrag. Easy to work on and easy to take apart (once you know how). If you do a search you can find a post in this forum made by me. It has pictures of the tranny. Also taking it apart. I think they will help you alot.

Thanks John, I'll try and find it
is this the image you were talking about?
It doesnt show the output couplings, I dont know how they come off. Do they just pull out?
I was also thinking of buying a subscription to www.alldatadiy.com if I cant find out what I need.
It is the shift fork or the tip on the shift fork. Doesn't sound like syncro to me either.
John we need to stop agreeing on everything.

I am not a Getrag expert, but I think John is right on the shift fork
Looking at the picture it looks like you some how still have part of the axle assembly in the trans. There is a retaining clip in the diff that slides on the axle when you put it in that keeps it from coming out. I have used a crowbar and a hammer to get the axles out on my Isuzu, and I can't imagie it be any different for the Getrag

Thanks for the advice guys I'll try to get thoes couplings off and have a look later on today
First to get what is left of the axles out use a tuning fork (or pry bar), but tuning fork works great!! Refer to this post
Tranny Pictures for pictures of my tranny work. See this picture
you need to remove that seal and you will then see this
That bolt and all the other on the ouotside of the tranny and you can split the case. Hope this helps.

I agree, a wide crow bar and a hammer will get them out.

Thats a 12Mil allen nut am I right?
So I got the tranny apart and the forks seemed fine. The 3rd gear scyncro has more wear then the other scyncros so I brought the gear sets into the dealer and they said it looks pretty worn for only 68k. Then one guy askes doenst it still have power train warranty? and with my luck IT DOES!!!! till June 08. So I know how to take my Getrag apart when I want to put in a LSD
Any way I gotta go back to work and put it all back together
