Hey,

Got an 03 Cav with 5 speed tranny, w/ 58000 km on it. The question is does anyone ever have the problem where the tranny doesn't seem to stick / go into first gear? This is an intermittent problem that seems to be getting worst. Any information as to the nature of this problem or advice would be appreciated

Yeah, the Getrag is sometimes a bitch when it comes to going into first. Sometimes when it actually goes in easy, I have to check and make sure it's actually in first What Adder suggested seems to make it easier, but it'll always be a little bit of a problem. Enjoy

Plus there is a form of a speed governor so that you cant drop it into first and break stuff!

I also agree with what Adder said. I've had more cars than just my cav that do this, and I have an older cav with a different transmission. I dont know if 1st gear is syncronised. If it's not, that's probably what causes the issue. 2nd gear before going into first should do the trick. Cuz technically you should never need to downshift into 1 unless you come to a stop.
