Limited Slip Problems
Thursday, November 08, 2007 10:35 AM
Hey guys...hopefully someone can help me out with this!

I have a 96' with the isuzu tranny and a couple of years (yes years) ago I installed my phantom grip into my differential.

When I put the transmission back together it worked for maybe a day and then the tranny stuck in 2nd gear, no neutral...I have to hold the clutch to prevent it from rolling (which I refuse to do because its the spec stage 3 clutch) Its more than likely that a fork a syncro is broken inside my transmission.

I took the transmission off the car and then took it to a shop, they jerked me around for a while and then a few months later I got it back. When I put it back on the car...surprise surprise the same thing as before happened. So I took the tranny back off and took it back to that same shop. Two days later, the shop was flooded in probably the worst flood this area's seen in 50 years. I am damn lucky that I didn't just take the car in. But after the shop got back up and on its feet they checked my transmission back out and gave it back to me.

Well after it didn't work the second time, the shop told me to bring my car in. They finally got it right. With my transmission fixed I proceeded to install my turbo and work on some unfinished body work etc...

About a month ago I took the car out for the first time in 2 years, I just wanted to remember what it felt like to drive it. When I pulled it to a friends house to take them for a ride, I got back into the car and realized that I only had 2nd gear again. Because the cars just been sitting so long there are a few running problems with it...not to mention the fact that I have to tune the turbo (that I thought was ok to install now that the transmission was working correctly). The shop that I was dealing with is now out of business.

I took it to a shop last night and this morning they called me back and they want nothing to do with my vehicle. I did the original 5-speed conversion on the car myself and it ran and drove as a daily driver for a year before I started in on any major projects on the transmission and engine. I called around today and there's one shop that's willing to look at...not work on but atleast look at my car. All other places have turned me down.

I am capable of taking the transmission out of the vehicle and doing it myself. But I'd prefer to have limited slip and I just don't want to take my transmission back apart again. Has anyone else had any problems with their limited slip conversions being too much on their transmissions? I am just frustrated, I am 22 and have owned the car since I was 16. I've done all the work on it myself until now, but I'm just tired of the frustration with it. I've driven it twice in the last two years because of this ordeal. Getting rid of the car is definatley not an option. Any ideas and comments are greatly appreciated, thank you.

Sounds like shift cables or linkage.

The shift cables are fine and I replaced the linkage...but it was a used linkage so maybe I will try that again.

im not familiar with the phantom grip, but if it has clutch discs then you are gonna need an LSD additive to the gear oil in the tranny. i had to put it in when i did the rear to my truck, GM 12-bolt, 3.73 gear w/ EATON posi unit. i know its proboly not the problem, but just tryin to look out for ya

I wouldn't start by pulling the trans.
pull the shifter off the trans and see if the gates are lined up and if they aren't, can they be pushed into alignment. But in the end the trans will have to be removed to repair it.

It could be that a lockout pin that was lost and is allowing the shifter to come back to neutral without disengaging 2nd. The 1-2 gate will be out of position and easy to move back to neutral this way.

The shift fork can be damaged/disengaged. The 1-2 gate will move relatively easily with no change to it being in gear.

The synchro could be damaged. The 1-2 gate will be out of neutral and impossible to move at all.

something external could be wrong. the gates will all move normally and gears will engaged and disengage as the gates are moved.

Thanks for your guys' input.

I decided to just call in reinforcements and have taken it to a shop (last week). They agree that its something internal and if there's a problem in the transmission that is more costly to repair than buying a new transmission, then they will install my differential into the new transmission that I bring them.

I would just like to drive my car and begin tuning my turbo.

Tinkles, I'll also make sure to fill it with a limited slip additive gear oil.

Thank you guys.

I forgot to mention that while my current transmission was having all these problems being stuck in second that I installed a spare transmission (that has since been used for parts) on the car for about 2 months and drove with no problems.

Ok, so my transmission is finally working and I got to drive my car home!

As far as gear oil goes:

The shop that put my new transmission in was kind enough to swap in my differential with the limited slip for an extra $100 (I think $100 is fair, after having it apart myself at one point). But they only put conventional gear oil in.

I want to change my gear oil and after doing a couple of searches on here most of the articles that talk about gear oil are in non limited slip transmissions.

So does anyone recommend any specific type of gear oil that they themselves use in their lsd transmission?

Syncromesh is the ONLY option for the isuzu. You can get it from gm its like $8/qt and you need 2 qts

Last time I bought GM Synchromesh it was $16/qt x 2. Penzoil makes a synchromesh blend that is more like $4-5/qt.

You guys just saved me a couple dollars then. I was going to go into a local gm dealer and buy it, but I will check out the penzoil stuff first.

I just need to buy a longer funnel to get to my fill point better

Royal Purple also makes synchro fluid...
and the Phantom Grip isn't an LSD, it's an LSD insert. it's a lot different...

YES, the phantom grip does NOT use clutch discs which is what you use the additive for, it just uses springs to put pressure on the spider gears of your non LSD. You should NOT put an additive in your synchromesh oil....
