first post here for a long time... some may remember me, some might not.
My 98 sunfire is circling the drain with the transmission (2200 motor; isuzu MK7) . the carrier bearings have shot a LONG time ago, thing howls and the differential case has so much play you can seriously move the axles up and down on each side of the trans. I have to add a quart every 1-2 weeks (with a 2 quart capacity, not doing this will only make the lifespan untill kaboom much shorter).
this isnt going to be a typical "can i swap for XXX trans" post. I've done the research, i've worked for a chevy dealership for over 5 years now, i know whats available and have all of the documentation on teardowns, paired with a few good buddies who've turned wrenches about 10 years longer than i have.
I know the mounts for AUTO's and Manuals are WAY different-- but what about the differences between a 98 Isuzu MK7 and the newer 2000+ Getrag mounts?
And while i'm on that subject, i swore i read somewhere that the 2200 and the Eco have the same bellhousing... is this true?
thanks in advance!
The isuzu and getrag mounts are different too... the front is close, you can drill a hole in the isuzu mount to make the getrag line up.... but the rear is way different. You'd have to grind the old one off and weld in the new one (which you can get from GM parts counter).
The trans bellhousings, as I've been told... are different for 2.2L/2200 (pushrod), 2.3L/2.4L Quad/Twin Cam, and 2.2L Ecotec. So, three different bellhousings. Nothing swaps.
supposedly, the older getrag from '92-'94 n-bodies (with a quad) is almost a direct swap...
Whats up Alan??? long time no see!!!
Like Lenko said, the fronts are close, and the rears are WAY different. (22629361 00+ Rear trans mount bracket). You also need the Getrag shift cables and shifter, but the axles are the same.
Also, like Lenko said, all 3 engines use different bolt pattern bell housings. The 2.2/2200ohv motor uses GM's common small engine pattern (also used with just about all GM V6's), while the 2.4 uses the unique Quad 4 pattern, and the Eco has its own "Eco" pattern (shared with the other ECO 4 cylinders)
