Anyone Change Their Gear Ratio?
Wednesday, December 26, 2007 2:11 PM
Just wondering if anyone with a LN2 or any J-body has changed their transmission's gear ratio. I have the 5 speed. Not to interested in hearing the auto trannys but it would be good to hear what you guys put in there for "aftermarket" gears as well. I am looking at rebuilding my transmission next year so I would just throw some different gears in there as well. If possible that is.

There are no "aftermarket" gears.
Some people have exchanged parts between 2.2 and 2.4 trans's to change individual gear ratios ie, 2nd gear, 3rd gear etc.

On the '00+ F23, your quite limited. The 3 engines in the 00-05 J-bodies all use the same F23 (minus the bell housing) transmission, gear ratio's and all.

The F23 is also used in the Cobalt, G5, HHR, G6, Grand Am/Alero......

These are all taken from GMPowertrain.com

The older Isuzu trans used from '96-'99 in the 3rd Gens can be regeared, as the 2.2ohv and 2.4/LD9 had different gearing.

The only gear you could change would be the Final Drive(FDR or differential). The stock 3.94:1 is really a good gear, especially with the gearing in the tranny. With a stock cam and valve train, you don't need any more gear, not even with the Hahn Stage II kit. If you decide to upgrade your cam and valve train to make power up to 7000rpm, then you could move up to the 4.17FDR(from the HHR), otherwise, just keep what you've got.

BTW, I change mine in my 3sp, it helped, but I didn't go far enough. Went from the stock 3.18:1 effective ratio to a 3.43:1ratio. I should have went to the 3.73:1 ratio!

You might get the Team Green LSD Insert, that will greatly help you launch!

I changed the FDR, 3rd and 4th gears in my Isuzu. The car feels quicker with the 4.11's in the car and the 3rd and 4th ( from a 2.2 ) really suits the stock cams well. My only complaint is now first gear is really short now with the supercharger. If I open the tranny again, I will most likely put in first gear from a SOHC Isuzu and a Quaife if I can find one

^^^ I would probably go taller if I changed, too. 5th gear is waaaaayyy too short for highway cruising, and... aw, hell I have an Isuzu transmission- I'll swap to a Getrag before I do anything to that I@!#$zu box.
