i have 1997 z24 automatic cavalier and they say only the 97 out of a cavalier and out of a sunfire will work does any one know why that is and is there a way i can change to a different one and the reason i am changing it is b/c i only have reverse and 1 gear and my speedo gauge don't work any one know why that is please let me know thanks.
You can use any transmission from a 95-2002 2.4 automatic.
You might want to pull the VSS sensor out of your transmission and check for metal shavings. It could be as simple as a bad VSS sensor, that would do what you are describing.

the junk yards are telling me only out of 97s will work do you know why that is? if any will work i will try it

as he said. from 95-02 the 2.4 had the same transmission every year. any of them will work.

you were right about it being my vss the one wire was cut in half i fixed it and it works fine thanks
