Transmission Swap

I have a 95 cav with a 2.2l engine. Engine is OK tranny (5 spd) is making an unhealthy noise. I have access to a wrecked 97-99 (not sure exactly) car with good motor and an auto tranny. I would prefer to keep the stick but might be willing to swap the motor if it would give me better access to transmissions. My local tranny shop said the 5 spd is unique to 95 2.2 L. Is this true? I have read that it is basically an isuzu tranny. What else was this used in? BTW the body on the 95 is in awesome shape so i want to keep this body.

well, the belhousing bolt patterns ARE unique to their respective engines. the 2.2 ohv, 2.4 dohc, and eco all have different patterns.you could use any 5 speed trans from an ohv powered car from 95-99 without modding a thing, 00-02 uses the getrag trans, and is very easy to swap in (relatively). there's also the 5 speeds from the 2nd gen cars, but i've never really done any research on them. basically, so long as you get a 5 speed from a j body pushrod car, you're golden.

as for swapping the engine, you would NEED the trans that was intended for that car (i.e. swap o a 2.4, you need a 2.4 trans, likewise with the eco.)
